Book Description

May 1, 2012 7 - 11 yearsThe Lily Series

Grow with the spirited, sometimes awkward, but always charming Lily as she learns what real beauty is.

In this fun, entertaining story, readers meet awkward sixth grader Lily Robbins who, after receiving a compliment about her looks from a woman in the modeling business, becomes obsessed with her appearance and with becoming a model. As she sets her sights on winning the model search fashion show, she exchanges her rock and feather collection for lip gloss, fashion magazines, and a private “club” with her closest friends. But when the unthinkable happens the night before the fashion show, Lily learns a valuable lesson about real beauty.

This best-selling, biblically based fiction series for girls—with a fresh new look and updated content—addresses social issues and coming-of-age topics, all with the spunk and humor of Lily Robbins as she fumbles her way through unfamiliar territory. As readers come to love Lily and her stories, they’ll also benefit from the companion nonfiction books that will help them through their own growing pains.

Lily Robbins is just an ordinary girl, trying to figure out who she is in a confusing world where she's teased and bullied and, as a result, doesn't have much confidence in herself. However, all that changes when a modelling agency visits her school, and to Lily's utter shock, she is chosen to participate in modelling lessons with a possibility for future modelling jobs. Lilly soon becomes tasked with finding God in a business where the focus seems to be on her outward beauty. However, a tragic accident finds Lily questioning everything she believed about herself - and who God has made her to be.

Something I love about children's fiction is the way it deals with serious issues in a raw and honest way, free of pretense. Here's Lily takes a close look at the impact of bullying, teasing, and name-calling on children's self-esteem - yet the young readers may not even realize the valuable lessons they are learning as the book is so entertaining! I loved how a firm stance is taken against teasing, which can seem to be harmless, and yet can do such damage. Lily's own moment of triumph against the class bully is awesome and readers will find themselves cheering her on! Lily's struggle with her appearance and her development of "God-confidence" is an extremely valuable nugget of truth that I hope my own daughters will take away from this book.

Nancy Rue has brought her trade-mark humour and light-hearted moments to this read, and the book flows smoothly from chapter to chapter, keeping me engaged from beginning to end - despite the fact that I am a father in his 30's reading a children's book! I highly recommend this book and look forward to revisiting Lily in future books. 5 out of 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read for young girls! April 16, 2012
Format:Paperback
In Here's Lily, readers meet the striking character of Lily, a 6th grader who is tall, fair, and has orange, curly hair. Lily doesn't have much confidence in herself, until she is chosen to attend a modeling school. In her classes, Lily learns to have confidence and poise--and to be kind to others. Lily brings her new knowledge back to school, where she forms a group of girls who are picked on and begins teaching them how to shine, as well.

Through it all, Lily's parents encourage her to find out where God is in her modeling class. Unfortunately, it takes a near tragedy to reveal His presence to Lily. She learns that it isn't self-confidence that matters, but God-confidence--the confidence in God that allows her to trust in Him no matter what. Lily finds that if she is trusting in God, it doesn't matter what people think of her.

I love this book, and can't wait to get a print copy for my 9 year old Megan. She will love the fun characters and the great storyline. And I love that the book focuses, not on who likes who, but on finding God.

***Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from BookSneeze in exchange for my honest review.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant Read For Younger Girls April 16, 2012
Format:Paperback
I received this book free pursuant to Book Sneeze in return for a review.

This is a pleasant book for young teens, perhaps, regarding the trials and tribulations of six grader Lily. It is part of the "young women of faith" series, though it is not "faith" heavy or anything. Many books, including those for children and young adults, have a moral to them and are acceptable for general audiences. I think this book too has the possibility to be enjoyed by the general public, not just "faith" based readers. The parents tell her to respect God's place in modeling (she learns some things in the end: "I didn't learn it in church. I learned it in modeling school."), for instance, but someone else could use somewhat different language to get to the same place.

It is a quick read -- about 140 pages -- and has a good amount of action. She interacts with her friends, family and dealing with a boy. She learns some things, including the possibility of misunderstanding others. The importance of family, friendship and being yourself are all promoted. She gets through various little trials, such as a kitchen mishap. The business about the husband/father helping out while the mom is busy is also appreciated. Some might have mixed feelings about modeling in general, but it all works out well in the end.

The writing is pretty good overall, fairly descriptive and the story introduces you to the action and characters from page one. Colorful cover photo -- no need to judge a book by its cover, but who doesn't a little bit? I would recommend this for young readers and give it three stars.
