Fifty-five years after its initial release, Little Richard's debut LP resounds with the primordial fire of rhythm `n' blues' jump to rock `n' roll. Richard took everything up a notch - the tempos, the innuendo and above all, the volume and energy of his vocals. Recorded primarily at New Orleans' legendary J&M studios, Richard was backed by the cream of the Crescent City's musicians, including Lee Allen, Alvin Taylor, Frank Fields and Earl Palmer. Though the same crew could be heard on other artists' records, with Richard in the lead, they heated up their New Orleans boogie-woogie as on few other sessions. There's a level of fervor, abandon and outrageousness in both Richard's singing and piano playing that none of his fellow founders could match.

The original dozen tracks clock in at just over 28 minutes, but it's 28 minutes of killer rock `n' roll, with zero filler. The first hits were "Tutti Frutti," "Long Tall Sally," "Slippin' and Slidin'," "Rip it Up," "Ready Teddy" and "She's Got It." Three more - "Jenny Jenny," "Miss Ann" and "True Fine Mama" - charted in '57 and '58. That leaves only three that didn't chart - "Can't Believe You Wanna Leave," "Baby" and "Oh Why?" - each of which has the same incendiary spark of the better known singles. The CD reissue adds three audio tracks and two videos. The audio includes Richard's two original audition tracks and a previously unreleased interview with Specialty Records founder Art Rupe. Rupe talks about the audition tape, Richard's persistence at getting signed, the New Orleans sessions, the impact of "Tutti Frutti" and the on-again, off-again career it created.

The audition tracks - Little Richard originals "Baby" and "All Night Long" - are surprising for their lack of indication of what was to come.

I'll second everything that my fellow Amazon reviewer, Hyperbolium, said in his review. (I certainly can't add any more details to what's included in this package, except to point out that this is a SINGLE CD, which has the "Enhanced" video feature, meaning it will show the two "Girl Can't Help It" vids on your PC. It will not play in a DVD player on your TV.)

But I want congratulate the producers of this reissue on doing such a great packaging job on a mid-priced CD reissue. The Specialty label is now owned by Concord Music Group (best known for it's jazz reissues) and they've given the Father of Rock and Roll a nice tribute with this package. I'm also hoping that folks who get this album, and are intrigued by the two video clips, will then check out the DVD of the film "The Girl Can't Help It!" and see the other great rock and roll stars that Director Frank Tashian (who directed Looney Tunes as well) added to the film. (And, hey, Jayne Mansfield is not too hard to look at either!)

I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.

I picked up this version because it is a cheaper "reissued, remastered" version of Little Richard's masterpiece, but this record is hands down the worst transition onto C.D. I have ever heard in my entire life. I wouldn't be surprised if the amateurs at Hallmark music & entertainment picked a cassette of 'Here's Little Richard' at a garage sale, set the equalizer to high across the board, and used a computer microphone to record it onto C.D. Do yourself a favor, stay far away from this horrendous version and buy the double album on Gold C.D. (well worth the extra cost) or rip this album from the internet as a torrent; either way you won't be disappointed.

What can one say about Little Richard? No one has ever matched that voice - McCartney had a decent imitation but there's nothing that touches the real thing. As of May 16th 2015 he's still with us and I wish I could relate my awe and admiration directly to him (but he'd probably just tell me to shut up).

There's not one track on this 1957 debut album that I don't consider an indispensable classic. This vinyl release from Specialty does the music justice and proves that a vinyl record doesn't need to weigh 180 grams to faithfully reproduce what the tape captured - just quality PVC and experienced engineering. The accompanying auto-rip includes a couple of interesting demos and an interview with Specialty Records founder Art Rupe. This record is essential listening and could set the sea on fire.

Let's face it. If you're looking at this listing Little Richard is most likely no new discovery. Seven of these 14 cuts charted and some are Rock & Roll staples.
Unlikely as it is, if Penniman (his last name) is new to you put this disc or LP on and time yourself to the moment you can no longer sit still. It won't be long since it kicks off with Tutti Frutti and hallway through doubles you up with Slipin' & Slidin' followed by Long Tall Sally. Rock & Roll does not rock any better than Specialty era Little Richard.

I remember when this album first came out. I was 9 or 10 years old at that time. This album was released before we had a stereo phonograph in our home. What we had was a High Fidelity phonograph player. Not sure but that may have been the state of art system of it's time. Anyway, the MP3 download sounds great to my old ears. The album has no hiss or the usual clicks the older platters had. I'm very happy to be able to listen to "Here's Little Richard" once again. And I remember all the lyrics of all the songs. Amazing!
