From the Inside Flap

Through his delivery of spellbinding presentations, the late Steve Jobs inspired audiences and galvanized people the world over to buy Apple products. An effective pitch has the power to make the world a better place and change an entrepreneur's life. History and modern research shows us that you can only move people to take action by reaching both their hearts and minds. Most pitches, however, are data dumps that fail to reach either.

Whether you're pitching for funding, to the media, or to potential customers and partners, to survive and succeed as an entrepreneur, you have to know how to deliver a high-impact pitch. Here's the Pitch reveals powerful, proven techniques to get your audience to take the action you want. You'll learn the same strategies and tactics that have been used by entrepreneurs to raise millions of dollars, secure partnerships, and win big sales contracts.

Here's the Pitch provides advice for every possible pitch scenario. You'll discover how to:

  • Establish favorable power dynamics

  • Engage and inspire your audience

  • Use your body language and vocal delivery for maximum impact

  • Become a mesmerizing storyteller

  • Create attention-grabbing fast pitches

  • Effectively deliver a twitpitch, e-mail pitch, and virtual and video pitches

Don't lose out on your next big sale, bid for exposure, or investment proposal for lack of skills. Here's the Pitch provides a complete toolkit that will enable you to deliver a confident, engaging, and successful pitch, time after time.

Martin Soorjoo has written a wonderful book on "How to Pitch" targeting exclusively for entrepreneurs and startups. He has highlighted the important points with very good examples which make it much more enjoyable to read the book.

Browsing through some books, I picked this one up and opened it to a random page. That page happened to be about "twitpitches." Specifically, the author was talking about how to pitch your business to an investor in a 140-character "tweet" on Twitter. My reaction to that was swift and instinctive -- I put the book down and moved on to look at books that might have more connection to the real world than a "twitpitch."

But something made me pick the book back up a few minutes later, turn to the front of it, and start reading a little more carefully. Pretty soon I was hooked. This book is simply excellent. "Here's the Pitch" focuses on pitching businesses to investors. But the advice Martin Soorjoo gives applies to any time you give a speech or presentation of any kind. In other words, its advice most of us can use, and use a lot.

One particular thing "Here's the Pitch" does well is draw on other books that discuss in depth ideas addressed fairly briefly here. Many of these books are gems that get little mention elsewhere. Brain Rules, for one example. Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, for another. And Hand and Mind: What Gestures Reveal about Thought, for a third. All of these books act as great resources to understand better the principles underlying how to make a pitch.

The casual, easy-reading nature of "Here's the Pitch" disguises a bit the depth of thinking here. As does the bit about "twitpitches.

"My girlfriend bought this book for me as my job requires me to pitch from time to time. I tend not to read `How to' books as most of the time as usually there is very little 'How to' and plenty of `Once upon a time'. This book is refreshingly content rich, while being written in an easy to read style. My one minor criticism is that `Here's the Pitch' is of use to people who are not entrepreneurs, so I am not clear why it is suggested the book is only for entrepreneurs. Apart from that - a great read and I am sure my pitching will now improve ."

An entrepreneur's life is never about one pitch. At some point, if you're on the path to success, you end up pitching at conferences, pitching clients investors, and the media. This book really does cover just about every conceivable pitch situation in a simple, clear and easy to read manner. This book really is essential reading for every entrepreneur.
