Book Description

It’s a classic love story: Girl meets balance beam. Girl trades long skirts for leotards. The rest, as Hillel once wisely said, is commentary.

5.0 out of 5 stars delightful August 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Well-written, engaging, colorful, bounces along -- like a gymnastics performance! Meyer skillfully intertwines growing up Orthodox in a single-parent home and being passionate about her sport. She deftly explains all three to us "civilians". *kol haKavód* כל הכבוד!

I do wish there were a way to award 4.5 stars, because despite Meyer's praise for her editor, there were typos and sentences that could've read more smoothly. Meyer, I'll gladly edit your next book [I'm a professional editor]!

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny, Squirmingly Honest May 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have already quoted one of the early lines numerous times and it continues to make my friends and me laugh. The book goes on to address more serious and personal issues -- hence the squirmingly honest. I swallowed it whole and quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! May 23, 2012

Honest and hilarious. The author's quirky way of relating to the world leaves you feeling more comfortable in your own skin. I rarely read the same book twice, but this book is refreshing enough to enjoy again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Balance On and Off the Beams May 20, 2012
By LSL

A clever and very funny meditation on the vicissitudes of gymnastics and life, this book offers a series of vignettes on the author's lifelong passion for the practice and spectatorship of the sport.

A fun read even while relating to serious topics and olympic mishaps.

Dvora's keen sense of humor will keep you laughing, reading, and rooting for her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Captivating and Insightful Glimpse May 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
In "Heresy on the High Beam," Ms. Meyers provides a refreshing glimpse into the personal internal emotional and creative dynamics in the context of a unique coming of age love story. There is nothing formulaic about this story. Would make a great addition to any school or classroom library. I hope that this is the beginning of a long career in publishing for the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll Want to Read It Twice June 26, 2012

I have read many, many gymnastics memoirs in my lifetime. Mary Lou, Bela, Miller, Moceanu. As interesting as it may be to read about an elite athlete's day to day training, how many of us un-elite non-athletes can relate? Not many.

Enter Dvora Meyers.

The first words that came to mind were "Spirit Animal." I felt as though this was a book I myself had written, but had no recollection of doing so. She basically replayed my experience as a young child who had become obsessed with elite gymnastics.

If you ever wore out a taped gymnastics competition or ever flipped your remote control pretending it was Shannon Miller, then this is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and funny! July 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this memoir. It was refreshing to read one from the point of view of a gymnast who didn't reach the top of the sport, but actually loved it even more than those athletes we all know. And it's funny!
