Great game, but...,

if you like blood, "gibbing", and dismemberment, you'll have to do a few things to the game before you play. This is a censored version and there was no way for me to reenable the blood and gore. Trying all suggestions found on the internet failed. The version that installs is 1.06a. 1.06 is the latest "Enhanced" version from Activision. The "a" version is censored and requires an original "quake2.dll" file to function as it was intended. This is easily done by downloading the 1.06 Enhancement Pack Update (4MB) from Activision. The Full Enhancement Pack (15MB) is not needed, since the pak files are already upgraded. Just a little tid-bit before you buy.

this game is really fun, i hate hearing it being compared to tombraider, this game surpasses it, its not even in the sameleague. the game really didn't take off comercially (compared to quake2/3), and wasn't really popular for some reason, the reviews from magazines were good, like 88/100. But sales were low, and the heretic2 community was small compared to quakes'. That is probably why it is 10 bucks, but the public's loss is your gain. There are still online servers to play at, do not think this game has been abandoned tottaly. the online battles are like a real time final fantasy 7 battle, lots of magic and cool 3D effects, plus lots of hand to hand combat with swords and staffs. a lot of fun, and the story of single player mode is good :) my computer specs are p3 - 450 mhz, and a tnt1 card with 16mb.. the game runs pretty smooth, and is very nice to look at, be sure you have a nice setup, at least 100+ megs of ram, and a tnt or voodoo3 card.. okay peace vilkit@usa.net END

High Quality Fantasy Brought to Life,

Heretic II is a game that I must feel affection for. It features beautiful levels graced with colors so vivid I sometimes feel the need to squint. And "Curvos," the figure you control, is a hero in every sense of the word because he rolls, pole vaults, climbs, jumps, and runs through these levels all the while blasting his enemies with an arsenal of powerful weapons. What's not to like about this game?Well, there are some minor flaws. Many of the levels are quite confusing, and you often believe you are making substantial progress only to find yourself back where you started. Since your camera angle is from a fair distance behind Curvos, you may have difficulty seeing to the side allowing you to be ambushed by enemies or making you miss an important passage. Hence, in some parts of the game finding your way through the level can be tedious and frustrating. Some of the puzzles can also be tedious and frustrating requiring you to reload the game repeatedly after you die from a fall or from sinking into lava. Despite these flaws, Heretic II is a truly fine game. It's a feast for both the eyes and the ears. This game brings a virtual world of high fantasy to life on your PC. Enter this world and be amazed. Addendum: It's two years later, and I'm not able to play Heretic II anymore--well, at least it doesn't play the way it should. I "upgraded" to Windows XP which was installed on my new computer, and to my chagrine it doesn't play right. Most of the problems I've encountered reside in the load menu. It loads OK from the start of a level, but it won't load after the start resulting in my being unable to load at the point right before I died! It's only fair to warn those of you who might be thinking of running this game in Windows XP. Damn Microsoft!
