From Library Journal
Complementing rather than competing with The New Grove Dictionary of Ameri can Music ( LJ 1/15/87) and The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians ( LJ 12/15/80) , this two-volume directory includes all composers whose music has been adapted for concert band. This means everybody: from Franz Peter Schubert to John Philip Sousa, from Samuel Barber to Leonard Bernstein, from popular song writers Neil Diamond and Jule Styne to film score composers Jerry Goldsmith and Alex North. Following a biography, each composer's works are listed by title, publisher, date, and arranger. For example, the second of ten items under William Walton is: "2, Crown Imperial, coronation march (Boosey & Hawkes, QMB Journal 76, arr. J.W. Duthoit, 1937)." There is a preface by Alfred Reed, a three-page bibliography, nine appendixes (history of American band music, publishing practices, publishers' addresses, band journals, foreign band music, marches, sources and repositories, American band research, the Robert Hoe Jr., LP series), and a 180-page title index. Small print is a trifling price to pay for this invaluable tool for all school and university music departments.
