From School Library Journal
YA-Lavishly illustrated, this oversized book integrates history, topography, climate, and culture to demonstrate the unique Scottish identity. The land itself with its variety of landscapes is the first topic discussed. Many YAs will have at least a passing acquaintance with some aspects of this country's history, specifically that of Macbeth, William Wallace, and Robert Bruce, due to literature study and current movies. However, to do in-depth research on these historical figures, students will have to turn to other sources. Chapters on traditional Scotland, literature, and arts and entertainment also contain references to items familiar to many such as clan, tartan, and kilt, and to favorite sons such as Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, and Robert Louis Stevenson. This brief, insightful overview captures the very essence of this country's rich cultural heritage.

From Library Journal
Scotland has a fascinating history; Robert Burns, Bonnie Prince Charlie, kilts, bagpipes, glens, lochs, Nessie, and haggis are just some of the elements that make up its past and present culture. Harris, author of a similar book on Ireland (Heritage of Ireland) and the creator of the "Day That Made History" children's historical series, compresses the essence of Scotland into a brief but insightful overview of the land and its people. Outlining the history of the country, from the mysterious Picts to its recent struggle for a parliament of its own, Harris admirably manages to cover all the important highlights of Scotland's past, such as the effects of the Reformation and the Enlightenment and the importance of myth and legend. Slightly oversized but appropriately peppered with lovely color photographs and illustrations, this book would be a beautiful, up-to-date addition to any library's collection on Scotland and its history. Recommended for public libraries.
