Heritage Stew [Spiral-bound]

James A. M. Ritchie (Editor)

Out of Print--Limited Availability.

Book Description

October 16, 1999
History books usually focus on famous people and memorable events, but Heritage Stew profiles another side of the community's history. Everyone has to eat, but what we eat, how we gather and prepare the food, and the stories we tell about it all reflect the unique historical and cultural contributions which build a community. The result is a unique community history book that encourages individuals and families to participate in history by recreating the recipes and sharing the stories. Heritage Stew contains about 30 recipes covering the history and the variety of cultures that have contributed to the community. Each recipe is associated with appropriate story from recorded first person accounts and personal interviews, often accompanied by an archival photograph.

Review

Heritage Stew, as with all good stews, is a labor of love. -- Farmlife, November 2001

From the Author

From the author's Introduction & Confession:

I have a confession. I don't cook. I can barely boil water, and then only to make tea of coffee. I haven't actually tried any of the recipes in this book. In fact, I haven't tasted many of them either. Which raises the question of why I'm editing a cookbook.

Because I like listening to people tell their stories.

Who cares what I think about the recipe or the cooking? This isn't a book about fine dining and high priced culinary reviews anyway. It's a book about the fact that since we're all human, and live here, we've all had to ear here.

And in eating, or drinking, or curing colds, we've learned about the world around us, and learned things from each other in the process.

The stories come from far more qualified experts than I, on what tastes good, and how to get it, and what tastes bad and why, and how to avoid it. There are stories about birth and about death. There are stories about a time before the "Wild West" was a glimmer in a dime-book author's eye. There are stories about events right up to the minute. There are stories about war time, and bravery, and making do. And, there are stories about diggin in and just enjoying the food and the company of one's relatives and fellows.

It's been a privilege learning about food and customs from all of the experts in our community, present and past.
