Book Description

July 7, 1992 Signet classics
At the turn of the century, Charlotte Perkins Gilman was a celebrity—acclaimed as a leader in the feminist movement and castigated for her divorce, her relinquishment of custody of her daughter, and her unconventional second marriage. She was also widely read, with stories in popular magazines and with dozens of books in print. But her most famous short story, the intensely personal "The Yellow Wallpaper," read as a horror story when first published in 1891 and lapsed into obscurity before being rediscovered and reinterpreted by feminist scholars in the 1970s, and her landmark feminist utopian novel, Herland, remained unavailable for more than sixty years.

3.0 out of 5 stars A woman ahead of her time October 4, 2000
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
In her Utopian novel Herland, written in 1915, Charlotte Perkins Gilman anticipates many of the problems of the 20th century, from pollution to over-population. Essentially a work of science fiction, the novel portrays a culture developed in isolation that has focused on principles of love, sharing, nuturing, reason and continuous improvement. While not great literature, Herland offers fascinating insights into a rational approach to designing a society. The Signet Classic edition also contains 20 intriguing short stories written from a feminist perspective. This is the book I will be giving at the holidays! It deserves a wider audience.

5.0 out of 5 stars A realistic visionary returned to us August 17, 2005
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
In Herland, Charlotte Perkins Gilman gives us humans (mere mortals) a glimpse of a world where all things are possible, where ideas of black and white and shades of grey have been turned into colors and textures, vibrant and pulsing with promise.

If one can get past the Victorian style, which is hardly worth mentioning since she was a funny writer and writes with a spoken voice which was unusual for her time, the reader will discover new dimensions of purpose for all people, not only women, and have a good laugh at the same time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing Like This! May 30, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Certainly there is nothing else like this book. Its Utopian vision is unique and worth exploring both in terms of its reference as a fiction work and as a piece of social commentary.

5.0 out of 5 stars REMINDER LESSON June 27, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
TO BE READ BY ALL US MEN. ON AN INTERMITTENT REPEAT BASIS. "HERLAND' AFFORDS US OPPORTUNITY TO RECOGNISE, YET AGAIN, THAT WE ARE CAPABLE OF GROWING UP; THAT WE DON'T REALLY NEED TO INVEST ALL OUR ENERGIES IN THEFT/VIOLENCE/GREED/EXCLUSION/VIOLENCE AND BLOODSHED.

GILMAN SHOWS US THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO ORDER OUR LIVES IN A MORE INCLUSIVE, POSITIVE, USEFUL, HAPPY WAY. THE NATURAL LIGHT WE ALL POSSESS, CAN COME 'FRONT AND CENTRE'; THE GREAT DOMINANT CLOUDS OF DARKNESS CAN BE SHIFTED TO THE MARGINS.

WOMEN HAVE MUCH TO TEACH US; PRINCIPALLY HOW TO BEHAVE LIKE SENSIBLE, RESPONSIBLE HUMAN BEINGS.

WHAT GILMAN DID NOT HAVE IN EARLY 1900s WAS THE INTERNET/ WORLD-WIDE/ INSTANTANEOUS COMMUNICATION. WE DO. AS A RESULT, THE NEXT FEW GENERATIONS, THROUGH HUGE EXTENSION OF 'INCLUSIVE NETWORKING', WILL INEVITABLY SEE MUCH MOVEMENT IN THE 'COMMON SENSE' HUMANE DIRECTIONS (QUITE APART FROM THE FEMINIST THEMES SHE RIGHTLY USES) WE ARE DESTINED TO GO--SO LONG OF COURSE AS SOME PERSON DOES NOT 'PRESS THE BUTTON.'

ALWAYS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER--AS DOES GILMAN--THAT AS A PLANETARY SPECIES WE'RE 'NEW FOLK ON THE BLOCK.' AND AS SOCIALLY ORGANISED CREATURES (MAYBE 20,000 YEARS, TOPS) WE'RE 'VERY NEW NEWCOMERS' INDEED. ...

SO, A BIT OF A 'KICK-START' TOWARDS THE LIGHT AFTER A 'PROBATION PERIOD' --IN FACT FROM THE VERY START OF MAN'S BEGINNINGS AS A SOCIALLY ORDERED CREATURE--OF PRETTY DEPRESSING DARKNESS, WHEN MAN HAS SHOW MAINLY WHAT HE IS CAPABLE OF DESTROYING/ SUPPRESSING/ OPPRESSING. ...

GILMAN IS VERY MUCH IN THE TRADITION OF LIGHT. WE OWE HER, AND HER SPIRITUAL ANCESTORS (MALE AND FEMALE) GOING BACK THROUGH THE AGES, MUCH. ...

I picked up this book after a friend gave me a photocopy of one of the short stories within, "The Yellow Wallpaper," a mesmerizing first-person account of a woman suffering from extreme post-partum depression. The way in which the story was written was so modern that it was next to impossible for me to believe it was written in 1892. I knew I had to read more by this writer, and am extremely glad I purchased this omnibus volume. It contains not only "The Yellow Wallpaper" but also nearly 20 other short stories, the novel "Herland," and an introduction by Barbara H. Solomon. I have not extensively studied the subject of feminist literature, but I found this introduction to be fascinating. Gilman is truly one of the first feminist writers and led a unique life which included leaving her husband in 1888 and becoming a self-supporting writer, both practically unheard of in her time. The feminist-Utopian novel "Herland" is evidently her best-known work, but I found many of the short stories to be much more compelling than that novel. The topics Gilman took up and the characters she created are instructive not only of how far women have come since her time, but also how little our society has changed in some ways. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the lives of women, the evolution of feminism, or just good writing in general. What is missing now is an authoritative biography of this inspiring figure and more widespread recognition of her achievements.

2.0 out of 5 stars There is little action and much philosophizing. June 10, 1998
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
We read that theirs is a perfect society but there are no particulars about health,, education, child-rearing, or politics. The author seems to be saying that only without men or sex can we achieve a Utopian culture. It was much more a treatise on feminism than a novel with 3-dimensional characters and an interesting story line.
