I have a 50 lb. border collie and I have tried every single thing possible the last 2 years and nothing has worked. You name it I tried it. I mean everything....except this. My dog pulls like a sled dog. My kids can't handle walking him and at times it feels like the sockets are being pulled out of my arm. Every walk with him was pure torcher and it got to the point where I barely walked him anymore. He would get his exercise by me driving him to the field to play frisbee. The minute I put this on my dog he walked 100 times better. Was he walking at my side like Casear Milan teaches dogs how to do just by looking at them? No...he was in front of me but barely pulling at all - I could even see some give on the lead ! As far the the humanity goes, these prongs are not digging into the dog - just a little pinch so he knows to stop pulling...and he does. If you ask me it is much more humane that walking your dog with a regular collar where he is pulling like a nutcase - could that possibly be good for him? I bought a size a little big and simply took a couple hooks (or whatever you call them) out and the fit became perfect - I suggest if you aren't sure go bigger because otherwise you have to buy the things instead of taking them off. Oh - one more thing. Whenever I walked my dog I would say one out of every five walks (an hour each walk) he would stop to pee - he had no interest in anything except pulling to get to God knows where. Now every walk he pees 3 times! As crazy as it sounds it opened up a whole new world for him - smelling grass, trees, where other dogs went, etc. I assure anyone my dog is happier taking walks with this collar on that he is not taking any walks or taking walks with things that either choke him, strain his neck or make him disoriented.

My mother has a 90lb Pitbull mix and a 120lb Sheepdog. Positive reinforcement doesn't work on walks. Cookies? Meat? Toys? Petting? Playing? No thanks, that blowing leaf looks way more enticing! Turning around didn't work. Just plain stopping and waiting for slack did not make these boneheaded beasts take the hint. So a pinch collar is how they learned. And they learned quickly how to walk politely and pay attention (and they halfheartedly accepted treats for it). Within two months both had been weaned off the pinch collars and now walk well on flat collars. The only time we use these now are for backup when we take them into public places, because they inevitably forget to control their excitement.

However -- this is meant as a training tool, not a crutch. Your dog shouldn't wear this on every walk for years, you should be actively training them the correct behavior on walks. Furthermore, you need to make sure this fits. It goes right behind their ears, not low on their necks. Like another reviewer said, google how to use prong collars. Don't use this ignorantly.

I will always recommend a pinch collar over choke chains (which hardly anyone uses correctly). This won't damage your dog's trachea or hurt them if it's fitted properly. It's an excellent training tool, but you need to use it as a TRAINING TOOL, not a crutch you rely on until the day your dog dies.

I'm very pleased with this item. Works just as advertised and is made out of high quality material.

The only reason I didn't give this item 5 stars is because it should come with instructions on how to properly use the collar - preferably a DVD like the halti-harnesses come with. A prong collar should not inflict pain, choke the dog, and MUST be fitted properly before using it. This is not a collar you slip over the dogs head and expect to work well. First of all, if you can slip this collar over your dogs head, you are causing harm to your dog as it is fit too loose, making this collar a dangerous device. Nearly everyone who purchases this collar will need to remove at least a few links so that it will fit correctly. When fit properly and used properly, this can be a wonderful device for both dog and person.

PLEASE, I'm begging you - if you decide to purchase a prong collar, be it this one or any other collar, find a trainer to show you how to properly use it or at the very least, go to Youtube and type in "how to properly fit a prong collar" as there are some decent instructional videos out there. If you don't know what you're doing, you will hurt your dog and potentially make whatever behavior you want to fix even worse. For both you and your dogs sake, PLEASE educate yourself before using one of these!

If this product came with better instructions or a DVD on how to properly use it, I would have given this 5 stars.

I hired a dog trainer to teach me how to walk both our dogs while also managing my baby, whether in stroller or a carrier. The big dog (90 pounds) was very leash reactive to other dogs, and required a great deal of strength to contain when she saw another dog. The small dog (haha, he's 60 pounds) pulled so hard and constantly that his neck is completely bald where his nylon collar rubbed off all his hair. Our dog trainer recommended these (over the pinch collars at PetSmart--he says these are better built and have a smoother pinch and release action), and we've been using them for about a month. I can now walk both dogs together with the baby. They stay in heel with the occasional check, and now even spend part of the walk with loose leashes. As other reviewers mentioned, you can customize the size by removing or adding prongs. There is, as I see it, one very annoying design flaw, and that is that you can only open the collar (to put it on or remove it) by separating the prongs. You have to squeeze pretty hard to get them apart, so if you have arthritis or any other cause of hand weakness, don't choose this brand. It takes a bit of time, too, especially if you have an excited dog who won't sit still. I'd much rather they had a dedicated connector.

Do as others suggest, and watch some training videos so you don't harm your dog (although prongs are safer than choke collars). Your leash should clip into the ring that has a flat side, as that gives you the pinch action (don't clip into the totally round ring). Our trainer also recommended that you also clip into the regular collar or a choke collar, just in case the pinch collar comes open or otherwise fails. (Another reviewer did have that happen to her.)
