Marvelous Music, Marvelous Performances, November 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Hermann & Moross: Chamber Music (Audio CD)
This is a unique and wonderful CD, and a perfect antidote for those who think of chamber music as "boring." Herrmann, best known for his film scores for the likes of Hitchcock and Welles, is represented by "Souvenir de Voyage," a quintet of warmth and affable nostalgia, and "Echoes," a quartet much darker and sorrowful in tone (one section more-or-less quotes a bit from his score for the film "Psycho," interestingly). But the real discovery here is Moross's "Sonata," a bright, cheery piece for two pianos and string quartet -- instantly accessible and very "American," somewhat in the Copland mode, and just as impossible to resist. The performances are uniformly excellent and brightly recorded. This disc is must-have for the more adventurous fans of Herrmann or Moross looking to broaden their collections.
