Book Description

July 15, 2010

A sumptuous selection of Hermès scarves chosen from seven decades of creative innovation.

The Hermès scarf is a style icon. Worn by royalty and celebrities, coveted and admired, and now avidly collected, this deceptively simple square of silk is much more than just a fashion accessory: it is the stuff of legend.

Since the first scarf made its debut in 1937, the House of Hermès has produced more than two thousand different designs. From the classic scarves that embody the Hermès tradition to the wildly imaginative stylings of contemporary designers, the House is always forging new paths and yet is never afraid to take a fresh and often witty approach to its own heritage.

A scarf is not the work of a single individual; at each stage of its creation, talent and craftsmanship combine to create a work of art. These qualities shine through in the illustrations, by turns playful and poetic, which lead the reader into a richly colored world with a multitude of motifs. They range from the equestrian themes that are internationally associated with the Hermès brand, through French history and the natural world, to global cultures. From vibrant opulence to subtle harmony, every scarf conveys a mood and every one tells a story. 292 color photographs and illustrations

2.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book but Still Disappointing, June 30, 2010

This review is from: The Hermes Scarf: History & Mystique (Hardcover)
Granted, in the "Foreword", no less than Mr. Pierre-Alexis Dumas says "It is not an exhaustive catalogue of the two thousand or so different designs; after all, why pin down butterflies when you can set them free to fly?". Nevertheless, I was a bit disappointed by the book, as lovely and beautiful as it may be.

Even if it didn't feature ALL two thousand+ designs, it would have been nice to see a bit more than what's chronicled in the book, and it doesn't seem to provide a concrete reason/rationale as to why those particular designs were selected over others.

None of the pictures or the visuals of the scarves come with notations/references. To figure out what's been shown, you have to go to the back of this not-so-tiny book and read through pages 291 ~ 300. A bit awkward and annoying to say the least.

It's a shame since clearly a lot of effort went into designing this good looking publication. I would love to know if there are other books that better chronicle the designs, even if it means a metaphorical capture of those butterflies.

2.0 out of 5 stars So disappointed..., December 30, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Hermes Scarf: History & Mystique (Hardcover)
While the cover is striking and the sheer heft was promising, this book was ultimately very disappointing. Some of the text was interesting and informative but it is not presented in a reader-friendly way. I would have been interested in knowing more about the individual designers who contributed to Hermes's scarf oeuvre through the decades, their inspiration, whether their designs were commissioned or self-conceived. I would have been interested to know the company's selection criteria. Most of all, I would have liked to have seen MORE SCARVES! Obviously, presenting all 2000 designs in the canon would be an impossible task but rather than show some of the less interesting contemporary designs over and over in different colorways, one per page, and wasting pages on color blocks with no scarves, I would love to be able to refer to more of the designs. Overall, so disappointing. These scarves really are art. They deserve a superior showcase.

4.0 out of 5 stars beautiful-, July 1, 2010

I am not a fan of hermes, so I got surprised to receive this book as a present. In fact it was an excellent surprise,; the designs of the scarves are beautiful, original, full of imagination, sometimes witty,or classic- lot of details to enjoy. An extra information regarding the making of the scarves, their design origins would have been welcome.
Overall a great book for anyone who likes design and the variety of references and styles.
