Book Description

July 15, 2009
What comes to mind when you think of a hero? Hollywood star? Successful entrepreneur? Professional athlete? Maybe Superman? Rarely is the guy next door viewed as a hero. Derwin Gray is about to change that and how the world defines heroism.

In his new book, Hero: Unleashing God's Power in a Man's Heart, former NFL team captain, pastor, and YouTube sensation as the Evangelism Linebacker, Derwin Gray calls men to live heroic lives by allowing God to reign and rule in their hearts.

Gray asserts that men are made to be heroes. Why is it, then, that many men don't live like it? Often, the pressures of staying afloat in a paycheck-to-paycheck existence eclipse any acts of boldness and valor, relegating heroism to action movies and fantasy worlds. Until now.

In Hero, Gray combines teaching points gleaned from his childhood on the wrong side of the San Antonio tracks to his life now as pastor, speaker, author, husband, father and friend with the truth of Scripture to inspire men to realize the heroism God intends them to exhibit. Men of all ages will be challenged by Hero, which also recounts Gray's time in the NFL and how that dream ended.

In Hero, men will relate to topics that Gray covers like: Getting to know the great Hero, living with passion and integrity, leaving a legacy for the people in your life, and embracing the hero within. Written in three sections, Hero challenges readers to look at the upward journey, the inward journey, and the outward journey. Gray's wife, Vicki, also brings her perspective to Hero with insightful notes included throughout the book. Hero is great for individual or group study and each chapter ends with an application section focusing on the head, the heart and the hands, giving men a plan of action for becoming the hero God made them to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Upward, Inward, Outward - Hero is Tremendous!, August 28, 2009
This review is from: Hero. (Paperback)
There is not a better speaker and evangelist today that is more real and passionate about proclaiming and living out true Biblical Christianity than Derwin Gray. Outside of the Bible, this is one of the most impactful books you can read to help strengthen your walk with Christ. And this is not just a book specifically for men either - women will also find this book to be a blessing and an encouragement. Derwin's writing and the profound insights provided by his wife Vicki will challenge you to think and act on your mission and purpose as a follower of Christ. And if your not a follower of Christ, check it out and come to know the One who is our Great Hero!

11/19/09 Update: Almost 3 months have passed since I wrote my initial review and I still can't say enough about this book and the principles taught of living heroically - Upward, Inward, Outward. Thanks Derwin and Vicki for allowing the Holy Spirit to work through you in the writing of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars God Works miraculously!, January 12, 2010
This review is from: Hero. (Paperback)
If you are contemplating buying this book, DO NOT PASS IT UP! Buy this book! I just finished it and I wish I could find the words to describe to you the change it has made already in my life. As a Fire Fighter, I can honestly say I had no idea what being a Hero really meant, until I read this book! It will change your life. God works in many ways, and I believe he worked through Derwin to relay his message and love through this book. The awesome thing about it is, it has chapters for all of us! If you are single and need answers, it will help you. If you are like me; married, it has a section for you! If you know someone whom you think needs to know God or be closer to him, there is a section in this book that talks to all of us. This is no sales gimmick! I want you to feel like I do still right now. I finished this book last night and sent Derwin a email thanking him for such an awesome book. You know what.....I woke up this morning and there was a reply from him thanking me for the email. God is working in me and will work in you too. When you buy this book, find a nice quiet place to start reading it with your bible next to you. I used my bible with this book every night!

God Bless you,

JT

5.0 out of 5 stars Hero - powerful and transforming!, October 24, 2009
This review is from: Hero. (Paperback)
"Hero" is about living with a God-seized heart and heroic passion that will change a man and his world form the inside out. It's a message that is desperately needed to rescue the hearts of our men. It's personal, powerful and practical!

Derwin Gray not only writes this heroic message - he lives it! For over ten years I have watched his authentic life and passionate Biblical teaching infuse Spiritual courage into the hearts of men who had grown numb in a culture that is filled with disappointment and disillusion. Derwin challenges men to become a hero while drawing them closer to the Hero heart of God!

This book is for the man who is willing to fight for the life he was created to live. I'll also be recommending to every woman I know who longs to understand and influence the heart of her man - whether it be husband, son, brother or father - with God's heroic dream for his life!
