5.0 out of 5 stars Kurt was a great guy..., February 5, 2007

Modest, mild mannered, and nice. Yep, nice. I met him a couple times, once at a local show, once at the zoo that is San Diego. He was never anything but kind, even when his eyes made it difficult to sign the stack of pages he'd bring to the shows. This book is a great tribute to one of those artists who had a simple style (deceptively so), who worked on some of the biggest titles at Fawcett and DC Comics, but did so without making a big deal of it, he just turned out great art month after month, story after story.

Kurt started out in the golden age, one of the artists who had the job of taking over Captain Marvel Jr. after Mac Raboy left to do strip work. Kurt so so good he was quickly moved over to work on Cap himself. After Fawcett folded, Kurt moved to DC and the Superman line (with some moonlighting at ACG). This book covers all that, with great stories about the people who made the comics. But most of all, this book is Kurt, his art, and the people who loved then both.

Schaffenberger drew like nobody else, you can always spot his stuff from a mile away, in a good sense. To him it was 'just a job', but to us middle-aged boys, it was magic. Good job Mr. Voger!

Another excellent title from this great series. Lots of relevant information, plus the usual collection of fine illustrations of the artist's work. Good value for money; I wish it was twice as thick!

5.0 out of 5 stars very underrated artist!!, July 2, 2011
This review is from: Hero Gets Girl!: The Life & Art Of Kurt Schaffenberger (Paperback)
I have many Lois Lane comics and just enjoy Schaffenberger's drawing. He really shows the human condition and emotion beautifully. But he also has a kind of humorous personality to his work. I think this is why he was great with Captain Marvel-this also was mocking the superhero genre. There was always something fun in his drawing...No incredible angst, alcholism,
huge, veiny bulging muscles and in your face bitter, puking ugliness. Yes, I know there is this is the world. ButI also love old movie musicals..Many of these were made during a horrible world war or The Depression..IF they are not "realistic" does that make them bad?In fact, many of these movies contain incredibly creative music, dance, sets and performers,
I am sure Schaffenberger saw plenty of ugliness in a world war.. Maybe it gave him pleasure (and a paycheck) not to dwell on this but to create a gentle, humorous, fun and safe world. I know the pedulum has swung toward "brutal reality" but please consider something just as good- just different. Great artist!
