The novel is great, not my favorite russian classic but certainly on the list of greats. The translation quality was good and as a shorter novel it is especially well suited for kindle. I read most of it on my small cellphone screen without trouble. This book is also great material for a literature course, especially in regard to the format of novels, as it takes an unorthodox approach with several different narrators and a lack of chronological continuity. Recommended for anyone who likes Russia, the Caucuses region, or just a great read on a rainy day.

You can view this as a travelogue of the Russian mountains and people, or you can read it as a novel about a man who is bored with life.

The "hero" is a well-to-do man who is bored with life and joins the army as an officer on the frontier in hopes that the danger will give him some excitement. Even bullets whizzing by his head became boring. The tragedy is that his thoughtless interactions with others lead to their ruin.

This is an important work of Russian literature, and of world literature.

Like other Russian novels, A Hero of Our Time was not afraid to integrate philosophical ideas with the story line. The main character has significant character flaws, which he reveals and psychoanalyzes in his own diary entries.

This novel is not a good if you wish to relate with the character and want an uplifting ending. Instead, read it to understand the depths of our psyche and why we do the evil things we do. Evilness is not a condition that simply appears in "those" people. No, it manifests itself in how we see ourselves and how we see each other. A Hero of Our Times explores evil in a realistic light and colors and reshapes our simplistic caricatures of evil.

Who translated it? The original Russian version reads better. Most Americans will be amazed to learn that even 200 years ago the Russian empire was at war with the peoples of the Caucasus, especially the Chechens. But surprisingly the book is considerably less racist than many of the British colonial novels of that period.

No surprise to learn that Lermontov was both a poet and a painter. Furthermore, his Byronic hero not only shows the influence of contemporary literature but his ability to create a Russian version which would influence future native authors. A great read.
