Book Description

August 1, 1998
A MOST UNLIKELY HERO

He was the kind of man her mama warned her about, workaday rancher Sophie B. Jones realized, as she looked up to find Sinclair Riker's unrelenting gaze on her. But resisting him was not an option, for though his words hinted at the darkness of his soul, his eyes spoke another message altogether—one that Sophie could not help but answer….

Sinclair knew better than to fall for an innocent like Sophie Jones. He knew that heartless seduction was supposed to be his stock-in-trade, and that he had come to the ranch with one purpose only—to do Sophie out of her beloved land, by any means possible. So what was it about this woman that had him yearning for the purity of her soul? And could love really turn Sin…into Sophie's saint?

THE JONES GANG: The wild and woolly Jones clan is back—and better than ever!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love can make us a better person, July 11, 1998

This review is from: A Hero For Sophie Jones (The Jones Gang) (Silhouette Special Edition , No 1196) (Paperback)
Loved this book! Sinclair Riker is a man who doesn't believe in love, nor in the goodness of his own soul. Sophie B. Jones is a woman whose philosophy is to look for the good in everyone. She's just exactly what cynical Sin Riker needs and doesn't think he deserves. Against his own judgment, he falls in love with her. But he loves Sophie enough to let her go to save her from himself - the question is: is Sophie a strong enough woman to go after him and claim Sin for her own, and save them both? I love Christine Rimmer's "Jones Gang" stories - can't wait for the next one!

I didn't have the time to read this book and decided to try to sneak in a chapter at a time, but once started, it was impossible to put down. As always, Rimmer writes from the heart. Warm, interesting, real people that you care about and truly believe belong together. Best of all you believe their happy ending is real.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Book, August 13, 2011

Rimmer's Jones Gang series, #9.

Largely likeable characters in a standard Category Romance plot: the cynical hero out to deceive the innocent heroine for gain. As usual, Rimmer handles the pacing of the expected plot points a little differently, meaning it does surprise you occasionally. And we get time with the hero's thoughts and emotions, allowing us to understand and forgive him from the beginning.

The author did something she almost never does: introduced two secondary characters who existed only long enough to cause a problem, then exit stage left. They weren't really people, just a prop to advance the story, and I expect better of her work. But this was a minor complaint.

Two things stood out for me. The first was a character issue, the author and the hero pointing out in the second half that generosity was not the same thing as sharing. In other words, the heroine had something to learn about power equality, too. It was interesting.

SPOILER ALERT: The second thing was just semantics, but it impacted how I felt about the end story. The heroine calls the hero by his full name, Sinclair, until she discovers his deception. Then, she calls him by the same name as everybody else, Sin. I thought that once she forgave and reconciled with him, she would go back to Sinclair. But she never did. I don't know if Rimmer was trying to convey that Sophie accepted him for who he really was, but I think he liked being Sinclair, not Sin. It made me a little sad, which is not how I like to end a romance.
