Excellent Resource on Christians Who Made a Difference,
By Mom Who Reads A Lot (Washington DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hero Tales, vol. 3 (Paperback)
This book is an excellent resource on the following Christian Heroes, most who are/were missionaries: Mary McLeod Bethune William Bradford Brother Andrew George Washington Carver Jonathan & Rosalind Goforth Billy Graham Betty Greene Clarence Jones Gordon McLean Lottie Moon Luis Palau St. Patrick Rochunga Pudaite Mother Teresa Charles Tindley The book's format covers a 2 page biography on the hero, then follows up with separate chapters on character qualities specific to the individual (i.e. George Washington Carver's biography is followed by chapters on perseverance, resourcefulness, and service). An added bonus is that there is a list of all the character qualities in the back of the book. So if you're looking for examples of a specific character quality the list is a wonderful resource. I found this book very interesting, especially since I have never heard of the majority of these people. The age level for those who would be interested would probably be 3rd grade and higher. There are no pictures, other than drawings of the person at the beginning of the biography, so it could be quite boring for preschoolers and early elementary grades.

Inspirational stories for young people,

This review is from: Hero Tales, vol. 3 (Paperback)
As a child, I was inspired by a similar collection of true stories of Christian heroes for young people called The Adventurers. Not being one for fiction, I devoured biographies of people who attempted and achieved great things for God. Needless to say, I was thrilled to discover for my own children a brand new series of stories (in four volumes) like the ones that inspired me so many years ago. Every evening after supper we sit down as a family and read one of the stories. The questions and Bible verses after each chapter (three chapters per hero) make an effective and meaningful family devotional time. Our oldest who is 10 years old cannot wait to hear the next story!
