Nothing new,
By Migdy N "Book Worm" (Maryland usa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hero at Large (Kindle Edition)
Whoever has read Evanovich before knows that after a while her books are still funny but exactly the same. I have been a fan for a while and still enjoy reading her but confess that am getting tired of the same plot with different names. Basically, no surprises, we can always know what to expect. I wouldn't recommend paying 9.99 for this book, wait until it's cheaper and you will have a fun time.

hero at large,
This review is from: Hero at Large (Kindle Edition)
I am a huge Janet Evanovich fan and have read every one of her books. Many of the early ones are really good but not this one. This is the worst one of her books! It's corny, stupid, and lacks all the humor found in the rest of her novels .

Rotties Rule,
This review is from: Hero at Large (Mass Market Paperback)
I admit it. I bought this book because of the Rottie on the cover. I have (now) all these reprints of Evanovich's early works. They are almost all identical - cute but repetitive after the 3rd or so title. However, I couldn't pass by that Rottie.
Sigh. He almost never appeared in the story. A few lines but no relationship with his owner. Drat. Anyway, as with all the others from this reprint group, the story is cute. A good way to while away a couple of hours but nothing to write home about...or to warrant time writing a thorough review. DL

Not Stephanie Plum!,
By tricia "Tricia" (Seattle) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hero at Large (Mass Market Paperback)
Janet Evanovich's readers are so hungry for new books, that her publisher has re-released many of her first romance novels to keep up with demand. Unfortunately, these re-releases lack the sparkle that I so enjoy with Stephanie. In this book, a figure skater with car problems is aided by a hunky "carpenter". Semi-wackiness ensues, and true love begins. There is an aunt character that is so much like Grandma Mazur that you may wonder if they're twins. Sort of spoiler alert: The main characters fall in love and tell each other so in the first night they meet. Their emotions grow stronger by the minute. I found that really absurd.
So, I will go hungry for Evanovich books between the Plum series publications rather than buy anymore of the re-releases (this was my 4th).

Chick lit,

This review is from: Hero at Large (Mass Market Paperback)
This is one of the earlier novels by he author, written back when she was a contract writer cranking out remance novels using a pen name. It is not what I would normally read, but is an OK quick read while you wait for the next Plum book. A man buying an ice rink so he can drive the Zamboni? Well, some people satisfy their quirky desires. Overall, this is a woman meets man type novel - in this case Chris has an aunt who has been trying to fix her up with every single man who crosses her path.

One of her best romance novels,

This review is from: Hero at Large (Mass Market Paperback)
Janet's first book it definately one of her best romance novels. Those of us who have read them all know they are very similar in the fact that they all involved fast evolving relationships...who falls madly in love in a few days :) But this one has you hooked in the few few pages and is a short read that you just can't put down. Janet's books give mom's/wives like me the escape to a more exciting life that we all dream about. They are kinda far fetched in the men being so romantic, but we all can dream...right ladies!?!?!

FUN AND ENTERYTAINING,
By Lori Caswell "dollycas" (FALL RIVER, WI) - See all my reviews (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Hero at Large (Mass Market Paperback)
Before Janet Evanovich authored her Stephanie Plum series she wrote twelve romance novels that were all re-released by HarperCollins in the past couple of years. This was Janet's very first book published. When I saw it on my To-Be-Read pile I knew it was perfect for the What's In A Name Challenge for the book with a size in the title.
Chris Nelson gave up her figure skating career for a man only to have the marriage end in divorce. She is now a single mom living with her daughter and her aunt. She coaches young hopeful skaters until they rise to the national level. The rink she uses is not equipped to handle the schedules needed for skaters at that high level. The book starts out with her car breaking down on the turnpike. She can handle almost anything life throws at her but mechanical things like cars are beyond her knowledge. She usually drives a car until it dies and then buys another used one. Who could have guessed that her life would change forever that day on that turnpike? A handsome hunk of a man, Ken Callahan, comes to her rescue. But after he alerts her to the lack of oil in her vehicle she lets the hood fall, landing on his arms, breaking one of them. He remains perfectly calm and requests that she take him to the hospital. Then she meets his dog, a huge rottweiler, and finds out just how close the quarters are she tries to drive him to the hospital in his truck. This is just where the fun begins!! I really liked this story. Some days it is just fun to read a story you know will have a happy ending. Romance novels like this fit the bill wonderfully. It is important to remember that this was the author's first published novel originally published in 1987 and has only had minor editing. Reading this book now you can see how Stephanie Plum was created by this author. She has a definite style. It is full of humor and a very entertaining fast read. A great escape for an afternoon.

Amusing and Forgettable,

Janet Evanovich decribes "Hero at Large" as one of her early "red-hot screwball comedies." The story is funny but PG. Nothing red-hot about it. It would be a great starter romance for a young teen.
I disliked the book at first... I find it unbelievable when characters supposedly fall in love within 24 hours of meeting each other. There isn't much plot to "Hero at Large" either, but eventually the silly humor won me over, and I enjoyed the cooking mayham and the running gag about a possibly made-up car part. However, I wouldn't be interested in reading another Evanovich novel if they're all this tepid and generic. My first impression is she's Lori Foster lite.

Funny Romance,

This is the first book that I have read of hers. I am always looking for a book to make me laugh and this one had me laughing out loud. If you like slapstick comedy, you'll love this book.
