Biography

There were a few great '70s live R&B albums, from Earth, Wind & Fire to War, from Bill Withers to Marvin Gaye , Curtis Mayfield to Donny Hathaway. Count in that illustrious group the Commodores' 1977 double-LP Commodores Live! But the latter has never been released on CD in the U.S. Now that omission has been gloriously rectified with the single-disc Commodores Live! (Motown/UME), released March… Read more in Amazon's Commodores Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't Forget This One!, February 24, 2011
This review is from: Heroes (Audio CD)
Being the big Commodores fan that I am, it's often surprising to me how overlooked this album is. Released in 1980, it was one of my favorites from the group. They produced several great albums during their run, spawning several hit singles along the way. But when the talk of their best work comes up, the Heroes album is the forgotten one. I'm assuming that's because it didn't have that chart-topping single to help carry it, and that it was a "spiritual" album, void of the funk jams and love songs we had come to expect from the band. But let me tell you, this was a great album! I used to play this cassette all the time, and I simply loved it. This album is more serious than commercial, full of feel-good music more likely to be played at home alone than during a card party. But it is still vintage Commodores. The can't misses here are: Heroes, Wake Up Children, Got To Be Together, Old Fashion Love, Mighty Spirit and of course, Jesus Is Love. The latter has stood the test of time, as it is still a staple of black radio gospel shows to this very day. The fellas reverted back their southern roots(Tuskegee, Alabama)on that song, as we can feel the spirit from those foot-stomping, tambourine-banging Sundays of youth spent in church choirs. Like Midnight Magic, another classic Commodores album, Heroes has been out of print for quite some time now, and you'd be hard pressed to find it on CD. Though not as poignant as Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, this "forgotten" gem still stimulates the senses. And for that reason, they deserve credit for stepping out of the mainstream and creating an album that's good for the "soul".

5.0 out of 5 stars Premium Status Album, August 6, 2011
This review is from: Heroes (Audio CD)
I last heard this album in 1981, before the release of "In the pocket" album. I rate it as the best Commodores Album without reducing their other albums. For collectors, this is a must collect Album period. It's a vintage that stood the test of time, and after all this years, it still stands. Someone, please reissue this album!
