Heroes of a Different Stripe chronicles how ordinary citizens in Kalamazoo, Michigan tried to prevent the war from starting and continued to stand for peace after the war began-even amid the taunts, jeers, and intimidations of their fellow citizens. Heroes is a first-person journalistic account that takes place from January 2003 to June 30, 2004 (the day of the U.S. handover of Iraq). Its purpose is to give voice to the millions of people who were largely ignored and dismissed by the media and the Bush administration. The book is also a compendium on peacemaking that illustrates how peace is not just an absence of war but a dedicated commitment aimed at creating a more just society for all people.
