4.0 out of 5 stars These actually are good minis
Miniature modeling is a hobby just as intricate as any other. Excess metal (called flash), bent parts and unfitted bases are all a part of it. Do NOT expect to pull these out of the box and have them look good. They are designed to be detailed such that a skilled modeller can clean up the imperfections and bring out the minute details with a careful paint job. Some...

1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointing
I have to say I was extremely disappointed with these miniatures. Not only did my box only contain 5 of the 6 miniatures, 2 of the 5 I did receive were damaged. One bent out of shape and the other with a fist broken off. One also had a shield that was loose but that might have been the intention, just needing a bit of glue. While the damage could be repaired with a bit of effort and both shield and fist could be glued back on it was disappointing indeed.
Last but not least the bar at the foot of the miniatures was different for all miniatures, so that only 1 of the 5 actually fit well in the footpieces coming with the set.
The other set off miniatures (Monsters) was in a similar sorry state, though at least there all 6 miniatures were present (but 1 was unrepairable :(

Some detail work requires molding the pewter miniature in parts...one of these comes with a shield which must be attached (those who own one will notice the wood-grain detail on the back side).
My advice to those who just want to invest minimally into these is to have some superglue for the bases and the shield, a small wire cutter for removing excess flash, and maybe a teeny, tiny file for smoothing out slight imperfections.
For those who are interested in painting and finishing these models, realize that you are getting into a new hobby and may spend a bit of money on acrylic paints, brushes, inks, glues, putty, and other tools as well as butcher your first few models before you achieve any really slick results.
These models are as well made as any I've seen on the market. They beat the heck out of paper counters if you like DnD and they can look nothing short of spectacular if you know what you're doing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor casting, October 11, 2001

Same here as with the monster miniatures, the poor casting gives an anoying discoloration and some air bubbles do the rest to make this item not worth buying.

All extruding part are bend in such degree that you cannot correct it anymore.

It is a real pitty as the fine detail make these models 'want to haves' but the lack in quality makes it not worth your effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully sculpted, poorly cast, March 22, 2002

These miniatures are a great value! All of them are highly detailed and feature the iconic characters from the 3rd edition core D&D books. You will however need to remove an inordinate amount of flash to render them presentable. As for loose bases, you do need to glue them on. (Who doesn't?)
Tordek the dwarf is my personal favorite. His scale mail is incredible as are the details to his belt and scabbard. All of the models are superbly sculpted and scale up well with each other. (Unlike some chainmail figures I have.)

Overall (once you clean them up) this set is well worth the money and is easy to recommend. If you haven't used miniatures in your D&D campaigns you should! They're lots of fun and this is a perfect way to start.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad set...but WOTC needs to work on quality control..., March 4, 2003

I picked up this box on sale recently. I was glad I did. There's a nice assortment of mini's for D&D campaigns, collecting etc.
I gave the set 4/5 stars simply because I'm not impressed with WOC's casting technique, I find the quick cast method doesn't always work. My Mialee figure for instance (GREAT pose!) has lost the detail on one of her sides due to poor casting. I've seen the same with some of Wizards blister's. (I bought a female Paladin, who only had half a face!) A note for buyer's of this set: it seems there was some controversy over how the Mialee figure originally looked, & she was replaced with a less...anatomically correct figure, with the same pose but fuller hair & a different outfit. Also for some unknown reason Wizards also replaced the human fighter (Redgar) with a figure in a totally different pose. (upraised sword) It would have been nice if they'd put some sort of explanation in the box...to advise the buyer. This is where WOTC really needs to improve, they need some really good quality assurance inspector's working for them.
Also I DO find that compared to other companies, WOC caster's do not make the figures "slots" easy to work with. All it takes is a little extra cutting of the mould...
I miss the days of Grenadier & Ral Partha, I only hope that WOTC continues to improve their mini's for a new generation of RPG players. All in all...for serious Mini painter's out there...this box is worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nearly great, January 3, 2003

I was starting to wonder if this line was worth the trouble since the Monsters 1 set had some big problems. This set contains very little to complain about. Nice level of detail and good selection of classes are the high points. I only had to trim the bottom of a couple of them to get them to fit the bases correctly. Minimal flash and joint lines to trim. I see no air bubbles on my set. The reasons I didn't give this set 5 stars are 1) I don't like the plastic bases. They are just a pet peeve of mine. They take up too much space when I need to get a group of characters together in a small space in the game. The halfling could do fine with a base a quarter of the size of the ones included. 2) The human fighter on the back of the box is not the human fighter I found in the box. Rather odd and poor quality control from WOTC. Luckily the figure I got is actually better looking than the one pictured, so I will only mark them down a little for that. Overall a nice set which took a LOT less work to prepare for painting than the Monsters 1 box set.

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting reviews, February 14, 2002

I can see where some of you have some reason to complain. I do not see an issue with the shield. This is probably done intentionally so that someone who is interested in painting the miniature can paint the shield seperately then attach it afterward...not a problem for me. And bent pieces are common as well...the issue with the bases is also common and if you read up on articles from other professionals who paint these for a living you have to expect some issue with the bases...all you need to do shave some of the metal off the bottom of the figure to get it to fit...or use putty to fill in the gaps on the bases that are too large..for the price you cannot expect total perfection for 6 figures...I for one am extremely excited on receiving my set...and these complaints with the exception of the one about the bubbles will not discourage me. I have many figures including the new CHAINMAILs and have been very pleased with what I have received from WoTC.

4.0 out of 5 stars D&D minitures, October 20, 2001
This review is from: Heroes (Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures) (Misc. Supplies)
I myself have had less problems than these previous two comsumers. All of the miniatures were present in the box I bought and all where in fine condition except for a broken off sheild which was easily repaired aswell as the slightly bent weapons, but them being made out of medal it was very easy to just bend them straight. The six miniatures were sculpted in great detail from their armor to their finger nails. The only true disapiontment I found in this product was the square stands which as one of the other people said only one of the six would accually fit in. Overall I think these miniatures weren't a horrible buy with their detail and all but where not worth the cost, mainly because of the size, but oh, well. They where not at all as bad as the other two people described them, perhaps I just got a good box.

5.0 out of 5 stars shield of one of the miniatures, July 1, 2002

Well I saw the reviews and how people are complaining towards the fact that the shield was not attached. This is not an accident, it was made like that so it can be painted first than glued on that way the painting process is easier. I find these miniatures very valuable because wizards doesn't make these miniatures anymore and i think they are beautifully sculpted as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not as much trouble as previous reviewers,, November 27, 2002

there was some flash but not enough to scream about. The detail in the figures is outstanding. Lots of work for someone with plenty of patience and a steady hand would really make these characters "come to life". Figures shipped seperate from bases, with one shield that needs to be glued on. This is left off to allow for more detail on the figure's hand area. Set received intact. Recommend this set for anyone with the 3rd edition D&D starter games as most of the figures (6 total in this set) are based on characters are based from there.
