My copy of this is starting to fall apart, but I've enjoyed this book over the years. It contains well-written biographies of Lon Chaney Sr., Bela Legosi, Peter Lorre, Lon Chaney Jr., Boris Karloff, and Vincent Price. If you do manage to find a copy of this book, keep in mind it was published before Price's death so it doesn't mention his last few movies or his death. I think I bought this book over 15 years ago. ...possibly 18 years ago.
There are several photos throughout the book - publicity stills, behind the scenes pics, and a few casual shots. There is an interesting photo of Legosi playing Jesus, and he really looked the part. Beck does provide much about the lives of the actors and some of their views on acting. There is a complete filmography for each actor.
The binding does not seem to hold up well under repeated use. I'm not sure how a copy that is simply old might be. I read and studied the photos several times.

The book deals with the biographies of Lon Chaney, Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre, Lon Chaney Jr., and Vincent Price. It contains a full filmography as well as hundreds of pictures of the stars. Their films are recounted in great detail and there are rare stills and quotes.
The fact that this particular book is out of print is a crime. While the Horror film may not be the most resepected genre, it certainly deserves better than this. Calvin Beck's book is a great resource for anyone looking into this neglected part of film history. His prose is straightforward and accurate. Reading this book is a must for anyone researching these actors.

A fine collection of biographies of horror stars,---THE GREATS----utilizing facts----that existed at the time. Either that, or Mr. Beck is so enamored of Lon Chaney Jr., that he refuses to acknowledge the facts about his alcoholism and bully-boy ways----facts that even his own survivors do not see fit to fight. But, as hitherto stated, perhaps the latter-stated character-flaws of Mr. Chaney were not known at the time. But, as was also alluded-to, the othe biographies contained within this masterful-tome are well-worth reading and this book is well-worth the money. One FINAL WARNING: the facts located in the LON CHANEY Jr, and BELA LUGOSI bios do utilize DATED facts, some of which are nearly myths. BUT, the biographies contained-therein on the other actors have withstood the TOUGHEST TEST of them all----THE TEST OF TIME! And therefore, this book is most certainly worth reading---and is recommended.

I remember buying a copy of this to take along on a vacation to Florida
when I was a much younger man. It had brief biographies of all of my
favorite horror actors, all in one place. Its a shame that this wonderful work is currently out of print, I could wish that it would be reprinted and in the case of Vincent Price's biography and filmography be updated.
I spent many Saturdays being frightened by Lon, Peter, Boris, Lon Jr, and Vincent in their many wonderful movies. These guys even had U.S. Post Office Stamps with their pictures on them! This book is a modern classic that deserves to be back in print!
