5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful!, April 10, 1999

J.J. Johnson is a class act, and an incredible jazz trombonist. This recording is beautifully played, great songs, great arrangements, and J.J. sounds as good as ever. Wayne Shorter also plays some nice sax on this recording. I would recommend this recording to anyone, whether they're a jazz fan or not!

4.0 out of 5 stars J.J. I miss you!, September 27, 2001
This review is from: Heroes (Audio CD)
I bought this CD a year or so before the Great Trombonist passed away. This album quickly became one of my favorites--and still is. I stand in awe at J.J.'s massive output and longevity, and his ability to put out an album that's really swingin', thought-provoking, fun, interesting, and a continung source of pleasure. And in his 80s! Amazing! Wayne Shorter won a Grammy for his guest appearance here on "In Walked Wayne." It made me wish the two of them had many more such collaborations as I think it's the best track on the album. I'd give it five stars, but have to reserve that for something like Miles' "Kind of Blue."

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Music, April 9, 2010

This is a beautiful album, from woe to go! I had been wondering what happened to J.J., and turns up he's playing with a stellar band, including the awesome talents of Renee Rosnes, and Don Faulk who plays some impressive solos on this album. Wayne Shorter plays an inspired 7 minute sole on "In Walked Wayne", like most other tracks on this album, a tribute to one of the greats - one of our Heroes, in this case the great Bud Powell. I should mention that some jazz geeks make a big thing about what it would have sounded like if JJ had played on John Coltrane's Blue Train instead of Curtis Fuller, and if you wanted to know, you can check it out on this album - a wonderful (have I abused this superlative, sorry) tribute to Curtis Fuller! Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars another ear-catching recording, October 17, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Heroes (Audio CD)
JJ doesn't get much attention but he has been quietly recording some of the most rewarding jazz music.

While there is nothing unconventional here, it just has the right stuff to set it apart from the millions of the jazz-as-usual recordings. His compositions are filled with wit and grace, Renee Rosnes is superb at pacing the ensemble with well balanced impressionistic flights, but before it gets too lost in in the clouds, JJ brings it down with his earthy trombone solos.
