4.0 out of 5 stars The one about the different kind of "love", September 3, 2008
This review is from: Heroes in Love (DVD)
This movie featuring three main short movies directed by young talent such as popular actors Nicholas Tse and Stephen Fung, HK Photographer Wing Shya and HK DJ GC GOO-BI.

The first is "kidnap" directed by Wing Shya about a girl named Joe. A girl who wants to make intimate communicate with a beautiful girl she sees each day walking past her shoe store. So, she kidnaps the girl and tries to convince her that men are all the same and that the girl would be better off with her instead of a guy.

I found this film to be very interesting but a little confusing at times due to the film cutting to different sections of the movie. There are some segments of the movie such as the ending that may leave people clueless but the movie is left for a viewer to come up with their own interpretation.

"my beloved" directed by Nicholas Tse and Stephen Fung (both of GEN-X COPS and "METADE FUMACA: fame) is an interesting short film about a man who finds his true love, which is his gun. He sleeps with his guns and takes care of them as if they are women. While he says goodbye to his beloved baretta, he purchases a massive weapon called the "ejaculator" which the camera shows how he thinks of his gun as a woman and the woman telling him to prove his love. So, the man then goes out to do just that.

"oh g!" is directed by HK DJ GC GOO-BI about a young man and a young woman who meet via ICQ. They search for true romance and with the two darker short films preceding this short film, it was nice to get something different and a focus on love that many people can relate to. Like "kidnap" the ending may confuse people and maybe left for a viewer to come up with their own interpretation.

The final segment ends the film with scenes from all three films with a man doing his slam poetry talking about love and relationships. Is it better to be alone or with someone else? The translation of the poetry was done pretty well but for those who have no interested in poetry might feel this final segment may have been uncalled for. I found it fitting to end the movie in this way due to the overall theme of the three movies.

As for the DVD, the sound is pretty awesome. With the trip hop and variation of awesome movie throughout the film, it really sounded good on my system. As for special features, the DVD has a non-subtitled making-of featurette. By not having this featurette subtitled in English like other Universe major films kind of ticked me off. But to end the featurette is an awesome music video of the theme song by Nicholas Tse.

Some may think this Indie film may be too artsy or too different and I don't mind. With an awesome song by Nicholas Tse and really cool music to make the experience of each film much cooler, I really enjoyed "heroes in love" due to it's originality and being unique in a crowded HK market.

And if you enjoy this film, check out a similar, yet beautiful film titled "Paris, Je T'aime" featuring many directors and talent worldwide in 18 shorts.
