It's okay, but not as good as HOMM 3,
By This is thought to be the weakest game in the series by some and possibly the second best by others. Most people who play the HOMM series agree the 3rd is by far the best. That being said, Heroes 4 is a pretty good game; capable of consuming the hours of your life at huge chunks at a time. The emphasis in this installment moved from the heroes armies to the actual heroes themselves. Moving from the side lines to the battle, the heroes make yet another piece on the battlefield to conquer and strategize. The two expansions are, unfortunately, some of the worst expansions ever made for a game. At the time, the parent company 3DO was going under and needed to make some quick cash so they pumped out these two expansions asap. Missing any sort of real animations or plausible story which made the series to this point, most serious Heroes fans skipped over these two titles.

If you are a fan of the earlier heroes of might and magic games, you will most likely still be a fan with this installment, considering it still has the same core style of gameplay. However, there are a few differences in the game that may drive you away, or like me, make you love the game even more.
First off, one thing i dislike about the game from earlier games, but that doesn't really detract from it, is the fact that units cannot be upgraded. In previous installments, each unit had a basic level and an upgraded level. In this installment though, there is only one. The major difference in this Heroes of Might and Magic from previous games is that now instead of sitting on the sidelines, your heroes actively participate in the battle with you, a fact that I personally love. Depending on the skills you choose, your hero can wreak devastating force with magic, massacre opponents with melee and ranged attacks, or boost allied attack and defense with leadership skills. All in all this is definitely a great game, and if you are a heroes of might and magic fan certainly worth your money. However, if you do not think you would enjoy the different features, you may want to skip ahead to the now available to buy Heroes of Might and Magic 5, which is more akin to the gameplay style of the originals.

I prefer the third version of this game over the fourth, personally but it is still a great game. I just prefer the graphics and gameplay of the last game better than this one.

Have played HHM III and IV and purchased this for the game add-on packs. They are great and have had endless fun using the game editor to make new games. The game even worked in windows 7, I just told it to play as windows xp program. Love it! Now if 3DO would have just fixed HHM V !!

I would have to raise my hand in shame to say that I've proabably spent more time playing Heroes of Might and Magic IV than any of the other games. But only because of circumstance.
HoMM 1-3 and 5 are all better games. But this one isn't a complete waste of time and money. It plays much like HoMM 3, but with some distinct shortcomings. They are: First: Your heroes are all very read more mortal on the battlefield. It wouldn't be so bad if they just weren't so weak. Enemies will often target him or her first, kicking your butt hard. You'll feel cheated and then you'll load your game. And by the 100th time, you'll really get sick of it. Second: There's not a very good dynamic of you're-winning--you're-losing--you're-winning. If you start to lose your grip, you'll eventually lose the whole map. You're either dominating or suffering. Third: The music starts at the start of each song every time you access a certain part of the game. So, if you're zipping through your castles to upgrade (which you do almost every turn), the music starts, then suddenly ends. Then suddenly starts again and stops. And then on again. I was so sick of the singing baritone man that I still sometimes have his voice in my head (and it's been a very long time since I played this one). If you absolutely love HoMM and you want a fresh twist but haven't played this one, I'd pick it up in a heartbeat. But if you haven't even tried 3 or 5 yet, then you're doing yourself a huge disservice by starting here.

HEROES IV Complete is not Heroes III but it is still worth playing. The programmers spent more time with Animation effects than with game play.
If you have not played III then IV will be a good experience. After IV get III and make the comparison.

The only thing I didn't like about the game was having to make choices on building up my towns. Everything else about the game was great. I like how your hero could actually participate in the combat. All in all I would reccomend this game to anyone who has liked the series at all.

For a little over $10 you get HOMM4 plus both of the expansions. The game is very addictive. I personally prefer HOMM4 because heroes can participate in combat and more variety in character growth (hero classes, etc). Also for lv 2,3,4 creatures you can only build one of two choices per town. There's also no upgrade for creatures.
expansions: Gathering storm is not bad, I've got through 4 of the 6 campaigns, the heroes start off with a set of skills and hero class you can keep the hero class and develop your hero into something else. It was quite fun to play. The new creatures are a little too powerful though. Winds of War looks like it was rushed out the door and the maps are not as well designed as the original maps or gathering storm ones |
