When Kris Bowers first released his stunning ambitious debut CD in 2014 with this
highly versatile contemporary jazz album, the rising young pianist- keyboardist would
electrify the critics and listeners with a stark mixture of crossover explorations, social
commentary, hip-hop, encouraging artistry and acoustic jazz, as the elements added
to the success of this sophomore CD. Heroes + Misfits is an ambitious first-time CD
that showcases his creative eclecticism and diverse merit that serve as the basis for
the characteristics from his generations that have been exposed to more information
than any other generation in history, and how for the first time his generation started
to successfully speak out and become more vocal the world over. Playing mostly on
the piano as well as on the Fender Rhodes, electronics and synthesizer, the thought
provoking track set starts with Forever Spring as it proceeds well on other tracks like
Wake The Neighbors, the socially-conscious #The Protester, Vices And Virtues, the
smoky solo hit Drift and Ways Of Life, while marvelous vocal support comes directly
from Julia Esterlin (Forget-er), Chris Turner (Wonderlove), and the magnificent Jose
James (Ways Of Life). What you will hear on Heroes + Misfits is how Bowers points
out to his generation of individualism has become a compelling ray of hope and how
it became overwhelmingly outspoken on a set of important issues like human rights,
climate change, economic injustice and government corruption.

Kris Bowers continues in the tradition of young jazz musicians such as Robert Glasper, Christian Atunde Adjuah, Erimaj etc to create a dazzling debut lp fusing jazz, hip hop, and pop. Bowers has crafted a smart, light but substantial album that should appeal to all but the stuffiest of jazz fans highlight s include Wonderland, Forget-er, Drift, #Protester and Wake the Neighbors

Brilliant, complex and will be years in good listening. So much to listen for and yet just good music to sit back and enjoy.
