From the Back Cover

An inspiring collection of heroes from whom our daughters can learn to lead a fulfilling and impactful life

In Heroes for MyDaughter, the New York Times bestselling author Brad Meltzer brings together the stories of fifty-five remarkable people, a diverse set of individuals from across time and from all walks of life: artists and inventors, scientists and explorers, who each dedicated their life to making our world a better place. From Eleanor Roosevelt to Amelia Earhart, Anne Frank to Randy Pausch, Theodore Roosevelt to Lucille Ball, Rosa Parks to the passengers on United Flight 93, the lives of these men and women offer lessons to guide our daughters on their journey to adulthood—lessons sure to inspire them as they take their place as citizens in our society and in the world. The stories told in Heroes for My Daughter are perfect for mothers and daughters to read and treasure together.

About the Author

Brad Meltzer is the number one New York Times bestselling author of The Inner Circle, The Book of Fate, and six other bestselling thrillers. He is also the host of the TV show Brad Meltzer's Decoded on the History Channel. He lives in Florida with his wife and three children. His sons prefer the book Heroes for My Son. His daughter prefers this one.

More About the Author

Brad Meltzer is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Inner Circle and The Book of Fate, as well as the bestsellers The Tenth Justice, Dead Even, The First Counsel, The Millionaires, The Zero Game, and The Book of Lies. He is also the author of the nonfiction bestsellers, Heroes For My Son and Heroes For My Daughter, collecting heroes from Jim Henson, to Rosa Parks, to Mr. Rogers. Brad is also the host of the History Channel TV show, Brad Meltzer's Decoded -- one of the co-creators of the TV show, "Jack & Bobby" -- and is the #1 selling author of the critically-acclaimed comic books, Identity Crisis and Justice League of America, for which he won the prestigious Eisner Award. His newest book, The Fifth Assassin, will be published in January 2013.

Raised in Brooklyn and Miami, Brad is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Columbia Law School. You can find him regularly on facebook.com/bradmeltzer or at bradmeltzer.com.

For authenticity, The Book of Fate was researched with the help of former Presidents Clinton and Bush. He was selected by the Department of Homeland Security to brainstorm different ways that terrorists can attack the US. The Inner Circle is about a young archivist in the National Archives who finds out that George Washington's secret spy ring still exists to this very day.

His books have spent nearly a year on the bestseller lists, and have been translated into over 25 languages, from Hebrew to Bulgarian. In The Tenth Justice, the opening lines are: "Ben Addison was sweating. Like a pig." In the Hebrew translation, it became: "Ben Addison was sweating. Like a horse." We're not sure if it's a kosher thing or what.

Brad has played himself as an extra in Woody Allen's Celebrity and earned credit from Columbia Law School for writing his first book, which became The Tenth Justice. He also co-wrote the oath that the President of the United States gives to all AmeriCorps members. Before all of that, he got 24 rejection letters for his true first novel, which still sits on his shelf, published by Kinko's.

Brad currently lives in Florida with his wife, who's also an attorney.

There's even a section at the very end where the reader or the person who is giving this book as a gift can add their very own hero and that hero's story.

I liked the book and want to make sure my grandchildren know the efforts of the many people who persevered so life is easier and better for us now.

"Heroes for My Daughter" by Brad Meltzer will make a wonderful gift for a daughter or grand-daughter that can be read to them several times.

This is a follow-up book to Meltzer's best-selling "Heroes for My Son" published in 2011. "Heroes for My Daughter" is a collection of stories about the lives and accomplishments of 55 extraordinary men and women whose virtues the author wanted to share with his daughter when she grew up.

Some of the heroes are known around the world while a few are lesser known. They represent different times in our history and are drawn from different walks of life such as athletes, teachers, artists, presidents, investors, scientists, explorers and spiritual leaders. They were selected by Meltzer to inspire daughters and grand-daughters to find their place as useful citizens and contributors to society.

Some of the heroes selected that I enjoyed and thought were very good role models for young girls are Jane Goodel, Judy Blume, Golda Meir, Thurgood Marshall, Agatha Christie, Sojourner Truth, Wilma Rudolph, Marie Curie, Amelia Earhart, and Abigail Adams.

In his introduction, Meltzer offers this sound advice for his daughter: "Forget the prince. With your brains and your resourcefulness, you can rescue yourself. And when you have your doubts - as we all inevitably do - you will have this book, full of people who were wracked with just as much fear, but who also found the internal strength to overcome it." A good read, especially for daughters.

In "Heroes of My Daughter", Meltzer brings together the stories of 55 people whose stories he thinks we need to know, and more specifically, as the title suggests, 55 people whom he wants his daughter - and presumably yours - to know as well.
Many of the people in the book are world-renowned and instantly recognizable, including Abagail Adams, Anne Frank and Amelia Earhart. But many others are less well-known but no less important, including Mallory Holtzman and Liz Wallace, the college softball players who carried an injured player from the opposing team around the bases after she was injured and Alex Scott, who at 4 opened a lemonade stand in her front yard to raise money for cancer research and ended up so inspiring others that her stands ended up raising over $1 million before her untimely death at age 8. There are a few very personal heroes as well: Meltzer includes his own ninth-grade English teacher, his mother and his wife.
But every two-page spread - all of the heroes get the same space in the book - focuses on why these men and women (and there are plenty of men included) are the types of people that every little girl - and really, every one of us - should look up to.
My only real beef with the book is that the title will almost certainly limit its audience. I completely understand why Meltzer gave it the title he did, but I sincerely hope that many more people, and not just those of us raising little girls, will read this book and be inspired by these true heroes.

This book is a wonderful compilation. The entries on each person ARE short and basic but they get right to the point and give enough information to show why they are special people. I like that they included people such as his grandmother, which shows how everyday people can be heroes in someone's eyes. I love that my daughter was interested in it and I think if the entries on each person were longer she wouldn't have finished the book. Keep in mind that it was written for the author's daughter and not meant to be a history lesson. This is a book that will spark imaginations and encourage children to realize their dreams.

I gave this book to my 11 year old daughter and she absolutely loved it. For two days she could not put the book down and she was quoting facts about the different people in the book. No matter where we were driving, she was reading the book. The bios are short, so kids can get a feeling about the subject quickly. The list of people is interesting (I mean the Three Stooges as heroes) and the author explains why each one is in there.

I would recommend getting this book for your girls and also getting the authors heroes book for your sons. They really aren't gender specific, so the kids can share.

As a teacher and a mother of a 1st grader, this is exactly what I had hoped it would be. The passages are 1 page long each, and about a wide range of people (and a cartoon character) - long enough to briefly cover the subject, but short enough to keep it interesting - and to hold the attention span of elementary aged children. I am thrilled to add this to my library of character building books.

First of all, I have to say that I absolutely adore this cover. Just looking at it melts my heart. I believe that it is the perfect representation for what is behind the cover.
Brad Meltzer is a well-known author that many have read and enjoyed. His novels are filled with intrigue, suspense and roller coaster thrills. Heroes for My Daughters takes readers into the heart of Mr. Meltzer and brings to life the glorious and untouchable love that he feels for his precious daughter. Just how does he do this? By providing a written legacy of sorts. Mr. Meltzer takes women (and men) that he admires and feels has made an enormous impact on the world and writes this down for his daughter. Each page contains a photograph of the hero as well as a page that talks about that person, what they have done in life and a lovely quote by them. These heroes range far and wide from well-known persons such as Helen Keller, Winston Churchill, Mahatma Gandhi and Jane Goodall to a bit lesser known people such as Dorothea Lange, Hannah Senesh, Wilma Rudolph and Temple Grandin. My favorite is Alex Scott's story. It truly brought tears to my eyes and an ache to my heart. Mr. Meltzer, of course, includes his wife, mother and grandmother in this inspirational and touching book that his daughter is sure to treasure and pass along to her own child someday. I loved catching a glimpse inside these women that raised and touched the author personally.
Heroes to My Daughter is such a wonderful, inspirational and brilliant book. I commend the author for bringing together these heroes, sharing them with the world and teaching us all that there are people in the world with so much strength, perseverance and the ability to truly touch so many people.
