This book preserves an important aspect in the history of baseball and in African American history, and it does so in a riveting way. A sincere and fascinating tribute -- and a handsome one, to boot.

I purchased this book for a young boy age 13 and I also have one myself. This book and DVD is an excellent, fun history lesson for a child or pre-teen to reference at his or her leasure. It's an easy read and a great reference for people of all ages who want to know more about the Negro Baseball Leagues! A must have!

This beautiful volume is written by Jack Morelli and illustrated by Mark Chiarello (who, despite his passion for baseball, is probably more well known for his work painting a different sort of Batman...). It is based on the set of baseball cards that the two produced several years earlier.

The biographies are quick and interesting reads - and due to the context, a bit more dramatic than your conventional 'back of baseball card' material. And the art is fantastic - bittersweet and oddly nostalgic.

This book makes a terrific gift for anyone interested in art, baseball, history or any combination thereof.

I gave this book to my grandfather because he is a huge history fan. He really has enjoyed learning about the Negro League's great players. He has shared with me a lot of facts that I never knew! The dvd cliched it for him! Thanks so much for offering something that brought so much fun and enjoyment.

This books is a must for anyone interested in learning about the Negro Leagues. Each page is written as a baseball card. The DVD is about 30 minutes. It is interviews with some of the great players of the Negro Leagues. It is amazing to listen to Satchel Page. These gentlemen truly played for the love of the game.

Most baseball fans have probably heard of Satchel Paige (2000 wins!) and Josh Gibson (391 lifetime), and this book introduces a total of 60 players, in a format of one page text next to a page painting. There are some that did go on to play in the majors, of course Jackie Robinson, Ernie Banks, Hammering Hank, and Roy Campanella. A player like Ray Dandridge provided invaluable advise to an up-and- comer, Willie Mays “He was like my dad”.. And be sure to watch the video which includes Campanella, Satchel, Buckie Leonard, and Don Newcomb talk about their time. Whatever your city, you may find references to teams there.. for example Sammy T Hughes was born in Louisville and played for the Louisville White Sox and Norman “Turkey” Strears played for St. Louis Stars ad Compton Avenue Park. . Buck O’neill from Carrabelle Florida was first black coach in majors. There are some incredible athletes such as Smokey Joe Williams wit a 1914 records of 41-3. A lot of these players also did well in winter leagues in Cuba although the risks there included yellow fever (and Chino Smith succumbed to that).
