4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Collection of Songs, But Only Loosely Tied to Heroes
I first heard about this album when it was announced on a popular Heroes podcast and I was instantly intrigued. I absolutely love several of the bands whose songs are on this album and I was looking forward to their new work (especially Death Cab for Cutie and Imogen Heap). I only purchased the FIRE AND REGENERATION track. I wouldn't spend anymore on this album. Yeah, I'm disappointed to say the least. I hope this is just the companion album to a future score only release!

You care about film score? Save your pennies and just buy the 2nd track of the album.

Don't mind the rest of the cues? Buy the album then.

1.0 out of 5 stars Seriously lacking..., May 2, 2008
By
This review is from: Heroes - Original Soundtrack (MP3 Download)
The score for the show is amazing. Sadly, there is only one decent score song on here (Fire & Regeneration). I've watched the season more than a couple times, and I can't remember hearing most of the songs on here. The two "songs" that stand out the most (for me) from the series, "Ooh La La" by Goldfrapp and "Mustang Sally" by Wilson Pickett, aren't on here.

I want Sylar's theme. The whole thing too, not a 30 second sound bit.

2.0 out of 5 stars Does not have "Eyes", April 7, 2008
This review is from: Heroes - Original Soundtrack (MP3 Download)
I am quite surprised to see that "Eyes" from Rogue Wave was not included on the soundtrack. That song played in the pilot episode of season one during the eclipse scene. To me that song embodied Heroes fully and set the tone for what would unfold into a wonderful story. A shame it could not have been included.

I first heard about this album when it was announced on a popular Heroes podcast and I was instantly intrigued. I absolutely love several of the bands whose songs are on this album and I was looking forward to their new work (especially Death Cab for Cutie and Imogen Heap). Overall, this is a pretty good soundtrack. Some of the tracks are very good (my favourites are "Nine in the Afternoon" and "Weightless"), the rest are pretty good and only one is bad ("Keeping My Composure"). I'm a little disappointed that the songs of my favourite artists (Death Cab & Imogen Heap) aren't better. I mean, they're good tracks, but not the best these artists have produced (and they have created songs I absolutely love). I'm sorry to say that I never really noticed the score in Heroes (I'm not that observant and am more focused on what is being done/said) but what I've heard on the album and the disappointed reviews lamenting the lack of more of the show's score means I will be playing more attention to the music when I watch the show!

Also, I am a bit confused about what these songs have to do with Heroes. They weren't featured on the show & their lyrics/themes don't seem to have much if anything to do with the show (with the exception of Bowie's "Heroes"). I have the Spiderman 2 soundtrack which had music "inspired by" the film, and those songs definitely had more of a connection to the film than the Heroes' soundtrack does with the show. I got a digital booklet included with my download and as far as I can tell from that it was mostly that people who worked on the show liked/suggested these artists. Which means they have pretty good taste in music...but it still doesn't explain what these particular songs have to do with the show. Maybe if the lyrics for each song were included in the booklet I could make more of a connection. As it is, this is mostly a soundtrack with a little bit of the show's score and songs from some great artists. Not necessary for every Heroes fan to buy, but good for those who like alternative music.

Heroes Theme, Fire & Regeneration, Natural Selection, Homecoming, Mega Mix (Wendy & Lisa) [10/10]--These are all the songs from the show's score that are included on the album. They are all good, but some are kind of ridiculously short ("Heroes Theme" is 13 seconds!). I was definitely missing out by not paying closer attention to the background music when I watched the show.

He's Frank (Brighton Authority w/Iggy Pop) [8/10]--A funky, fun song.

All For Swinging You Around (The New Pornographers) [8/10]--Sounds an awful lot like another band I like named The Veronicas. Kind of a `90s girl group sound.

Glad It's Over (Wilco) [9/10]--Wilco is kind of hit-or-miss with me. I really like some of their songs and others I've already deleted off of my computer. This is one of the Wilco songs I really like.

Nine In the Afternoon (Panic at the Disco) [10/10]--This is the song that got stuck in my head after listening to the album. It gets rather repetitive near the end, with the oft-repeated (and rather nonsensical but somehow still sweet) line of "it's nine in the afternoon/your eyes are the size of the moon" sung over and over. Still, this is the surprise hit of the album for me.

Weightless (Nada Surf) [10/10]--My favorite song the first time I listened to the album, and still one of the best in my opinion. It seems sort of wistful to me.

AboneCroneDrone 3 (Sheila Chandra) [9/10]--Very New Age sound of a pretty neutral instrumental background and female chanting in some non-English language (sorry, couldn't identify what language it's in).

Chills (My Morning Jacket) [8/10]--A band that I've never heard of before, but very similar to the indie bands I listen to (they remind me of another group, but I can't place exactly which one). Nice song, but not particularly special.

Jealousy Rides With me (Death Cab for Cutie) [8/10]--Definitely not Death Cab's best song, but very identifiably them. A relatively slow, simple song.

Not Now But Soon (Imogen Heap) [9/10]--Not Imogen's best work, either, but a solid song. Imogen's fans will probably still love it and those who don't know her yet should enjoy it as well.

All Things Must Pass (The Jesus and Mary Chain) [8/10]--Good song, not great.

Man in the Long Black Coat (Bob Dylan) [10/10]--It's Bob Dylan, and not one of his songs that I owned yet to boot. I'm going to assume that they picked this Dylan song in particular for the album because of Sylar and his (longish) black coat. The song is vaguely sinister and it fits with poor Maya putting her trust in Sylar (although I do not believe he was wearing a black coat at the time).

Maya's Theme (Cucu Diamantes & Yerba Buena) [10/10]--This has a nice dream-like quality to it and a Latin music flavor.

Keeping My Composure (The Chemical Brothers) [2/10]--I generally hate rap, so this song was pretty much doomed from the start for me. A weird mix of electronica and rap, I'm almost certainly going to delete this song.

Heroes (David Bowie) [9/10]--The only song that really obviously fits with the show. The reason this song didn't get a higher score is because my musical education was apparently lacking. I went straight from listening to the Beatles/Elvis/the Beach Boys on the oldies station to listening to the top pop song station which was playing the Spice Girls at the time. When I watched Moulin Rouge, I didn't even realize that many of the lines in the "Elephant Love Medley" were taken from Bowie's "Heroes" (yes, I'm one of THOSE). So, in short, although the song is good and fitting, I'm not the biggest Bowie fan.

1.0 out of 5 stars "Heroes" soundtrack? Really?, March 24, 2008
This review is from: Heroes - Original Soundtrack (MP3 Download)
This soundtrack was an incredible letdown. Wendy and Lisa's score from the television show is beautiful, and I guarantee that the majority of listeners would rather see a large number of their compositions, rather than other songs that not only don't seem to have anything to do with the show, but also most likely weren't even featured on the show.

Compositions from the show have a number of MAJOR noticeable omissions, including Sylar's Theme(!), Hiro's Theme, Peter's Theme(!!) the ending theme, and many others.

I would've bought the entire album for Peter's Theme, but it's not there.

What did we get instead?

"Megamix."

The opening theme, Peter's Theme, and a few other themes added together, with - what else - a techno soundtrack behind it.

Huge letdown. Whoever's in charge of this really needs to release the score. I'd pay 50 bucks for the score than ever consider adding this album to my collection. The Lost soundtrack was basically Michael Giacchino's score and was amazing. This was an incredible failure.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Composer's Mix Tape, April 13, 2008
This review is from: Heroes - Original Soundtrack (MP3 Download)
As a huge fan of the show, and a fan of musical scores, I was elated to see that a soundtrack had been released. The "Heroes" music is very atmospheric, and definitely a staple of the shows. I actually got it in a store, without even looking at the back. I wanted it that much.

When I got home, I popped it in, and realized what others have already mentioned. That is, there really isn't much music from the show on this "soundtrack". I read the insert, and the composers basically said that these were songs they listened to for inspiration or whatnot. Rubbish.

To put it another way, imagine going to get the soundtrack to Jurassic Park, only to find that there is only about 4 minutes worth of score, followed by an entire CD of nothing but songs John Williams listened to on his morning drive to the studio. And none of those songs have anything to do with dinosaurs.

I would suggest purchasing the track "Fire and Regeneration". It's a nice song, and the only one from the show that's a decent length. Ignore everything else, and hope that whoever made the song collection comes to their senses and releases a proper soundtrack.

I'm only giving it 1 star because of what score is there. And there isn't much.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not great, but good, March 18, 2008

Lain (Burt, MI. United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Heroes - Original Soundtrack (MP3 Download)
Huge fan of the show, a little disappointed with the soundtrack. I only really like about half of the tracks on this, but the ones that are good are excellent. One complaint about the good ones, though: the Wendy and Lisa tracks are too short, of course. Although, I'm not really surprised (I mean, I bought it) since they did some work on a show that I love that was canceled (be vigilant, fellow heroes fans: it could happen to your show) and the tracks were equally brief.

I am not a fan of modern pop music, so I do have quite a bias against about half of the stuff that's on here. The ones that really transport you to the show are: Wendy and Lisa tracks, Sheila Chandra, Maya's theme, and for more generic reasons the David Bowie track as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars More Pop Songs than Instrumental, March 19, 2008
This review is from: Heroes - Original Soundtrack (MP3 Download)
I was expecting more contributions from Wendy & Lisa on this album. The music they wrote for the show is amazing, but sadly not included on the CD. The pop songs are good, don't get me wrong; but, I was hoping for more instrumental selections from the show.

1.0 out of 5 stars None of the good music from the show is in here..., December 19, 2008
This review is from: Heroes - Original Soundtrack (MP3 Download)
Are you kidding me? How can this be a soundtrack from the show if almost ALL the main instrumental music that makes the show exciting is not on here? What about the freaky music like Sylar's theme? Even the ending credits song from the show is nice. No one cares about Panic at the Disco or The Chemical Brothers. You can buy those songs from their respective artist's albums...we want the real Heroes soundtrack, not songs from artists we can already get elsewhere. The Wendy & Lisa tracks are the only songs worth getting here, except of course for the Mega Mix...

This album is a complete let down, save your money, it's not worth wasting it on this.

3.0 out of 5 stars 80% of the song nothing to do with the show..., April 3, 2008
This review is from: Heroes - Original Soundtrack (MP3 Download)
I am heroes fan, was a bit disspoaiting; that the soundtrack is missing many song from the show; it probably missing my favorite song; is doesn't had any theme song from the character beside sylar. The main theme is way way too short. They pack with lots of junks; is not bad but just not related.
