Book Description

November 1, 2011 8 and up

50 true-life adventures of real people from the Bible—stories of good versus evil, right versus wrong, and heroes versus villains—and their life-shaping lessons that point children to God—the greatest hero of all!

The Bible is packed with stories of courageous people who loved and served God, and how He used them to do great things in the world. It is also filled with villainous people who disobeyed God and did horrible things. Heroes and Villains of the Bible encourages its readers to aspire to become great, courageous, and heroic servants of God, and reject all that is evil in the world.

With Heroes and Villains of the Bible, children will realize some of their favorite heroes aren’t from the movies, but are real people from the Bible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for Kids November 28, 2011

Looking for a great way to teach your child about making wise choices? Do they like learning about heroes and villians? Want a new and unique way to teach your child that heroes are more than capes, masks and superpowers? Thomas Nelson has the book for you.....Heroes and Villains of the Bible! 50 true-life adventures of real people from the Bible-stories of good versus evil, right versus wrong, and heroes versus villains-and their life-shaping lessons that point children to God-the greatest hero of all!

While we got the book with our son in mind, we quickly discovered the girls loved it too. This 242 page book is filled with beautiful full-color illustrations as well as stories that come straight out of Scripture. I love how the stories are told in a format that kids can easily understand and relate to and it ends with them figuring out if that Bible character was a hero or a villain based upon what they read. There is also a little box for discussion or further application to teach the kids how and why that story is so important and how they can apply the lesson learned from it to their everyday lives. We are currently using this at the beginning of our homeschool lessons each day and the kids are really enjoying it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful! November 27, 2011
By MGW
Format:Hardcover
Are you looking for a Bible storybook that will inspire and mesmerize your little adventurer? Heroes & Villains of the Bible might just be the ticket.

Heroes & Villains of the Bible contains 50 true stories of heroes of the faith -- and villains who seek to destroy it. Actual Bible text tells the tales of these unforgettable characters, while superb, vivid illustrations bring these stories to life. (The pictures, though not always historically accurate in all respects, are absolutely breath-taking.)

Each story's text comes straight from the Bible, the is followed by Scripture references so that one can go back and read where the tale comes from. A paragraph or two follows each story, helping to tie in the character's story to daily life and common situations faced today. It's a nice book of Bible stories for bedtime with discussion-starting tenets at the end of each, something our family enjoys.

2.0 out of 5 stars Heroes and Villians of the Bible November 20, 2011
Format:Hardcover
When I saw the book, "Heroes and Villains of the Bible," was available for review I was super excited. My husband and I are very particular when it comes to books for our children because we want them to be accurate but also keep a child's attention. The main reason I was excited was because the stories were coming straight from the Bible. They were not another person's summary of what occurred. I was also excited that it had pictures to keep children interested.

The text used in this book is from the International Children's Bible. While doing some internet research I found that this version is targeted towards children 4-10 years old. Granted a four-year old probably isn't going to pick this book on their own because there is only one picture per story, if that. But if parents were wanting to read a Biblically accurate story to their children they could do so using this book and some voice changes to keep their attention.

The major downfall of this book for me is the illustrations. According to the back cover the illustrations are called, "Eikon Bible Art." Perhaps that translates into bad computer images, besides the fact that most of the characters have blond hair in this book. It seems like a very small thing but why are we changing these characters to look like they came from Sweden instead of the Middle East? I'm sad to say, I would not recommend this book to families simply because children are very visual and if this is what they are learning from I'm afraid they are in for a wake up call when they realize most Bible characters didn't have blond hair and blue eyes.

Thanks to Booksneeze for the complementary copy of this book for reviewing purposes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Teaching January 5, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The kids responded to this book much better than reading directly out of the bible because it focuses on particular characters and even has some detailed pictures to bring their imagination to life. Makes "Bible time" with the children work out well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sim City illustrations September 19, 2012
Format:Hardcover
The written portion of this book is very good, but the illustrations are just awful. The best part (for me as the Mom) were the summaries at the end of each Hero's story.

Anyway, we like that it uses the Bible text.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Homeschool or Bible Study Book June 27, 2012
Format:Hardcover
I had the opportunity to review Heroes and Villains of the Bible by Thomas Nelson. I found it to be an incredible resource and I can't wait to incorporate it into our homeschool learning. I found it to be a little advanced for Cricket (5), but we will be able to really study it soon enough.

It is an amazing book to capture the interest of little ones, and get them captivated in scripture. I recommend that you pick up a copy to add to your collection.
