Gr. 6-12. These informative biographies from the History's Villains series offer readers good overviews of the lives of two notorious men, including the personal and historical developments that prompted them to follow paths of ruthless violence. The biography of Osama bin Laden begins with his youth and goes on to discusses his wealthy family, education, immersion in the study of Islam, and the many factors that led him to militancy, terrorism, and his leadership of al-Qaeda, ending with bin Laden, as of June 2003, still at large. The profile of the late North Korean dictator Kim Il Sung traces his early years, his rise to power as the brutal first leader of North Korea, and the disastrous war he waged against South Korea in his ill-fated attempt to unify the peninsula. Both books feature black-and-white photographs with informative captions. Appendixes include a chronology, a glossary, source notes, and suggestions for further research. Clearly written and well organized, these will serve as good introductions to their respective subjects. Ed Sullivan

Osama bin Laden -,
This review is from: Heroes & Villains - Osama bin Laden (Hardcover)
Bill Loehflem does a good job following the life of the evil Osama bin Laden from his teenage years to the Fall of 2002. In a book less then 100 pages, Loehflem in his introduction tells how a 44 year old Saudi exile caugt the worlds attention by orchestrating the September 11, 2001 attacks. He follows with telling the reader about bin laden's childhood and his rich Saudi Arabia family. He addresses Osama's relationship with Islam, joining the Jihad and follows him to Afghanistan. Reading the book, I thought Bill Loehflem might tell us where Osama is hiding. He does tell us what others think happened to him. Bill does leave us with an unknown future of an evil man who started a war with the most powerful nation on earth.

Know your enemy,
By stephen t mcdonald (New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Heroes & Villains - Osama bin Laden (Hardcover)
This book about Osama bin Laden, a modern day villain, is written in a simple easy to understand style. It covers the life of bin Laden from birth to present day in a factual non-biased manner. It is certainly worthy of being included in a study of current events on Intermediate/Highschool level in my opinion.
