Vintage war films,
By
This review is from: Heroes of War 10 Movie Pack (DVD)
You get ten public domain WWII-era films on two double-sided DVDs in the HEROES OF WAR 10 MOVIE PACK. This is a fine way to obtain some more obscure titles, as well as sample the MILL CREEK ENTERTAINMENT catalog for a very reasonable price. If this set pleases you, their War Classics 50 Movie Pack Collection may also be of interest.
. Parenthetical numbers preceding titles are 1 to 10 viewer poll ratings found at a film resource website. (6.7) The Adventures Of Tartu ("Sabotage Agent") (1943) - Robert Donat/Glynis Johns (6.0) British Intelligence (1940) - Boris Karloff/Margaret Lindsay (5.7) Flying Blind (1941) - Richard Arlen/Jean Parker/Marie Wilson/Grady Sutton (6.0) Gung Ho! ("The Story Of Carlson's Makin Island Raiders") (1943) - Randolph Scott/Noah Beery (7.3) Identity Unknown (1945) - Richard Arlen/Cheryl Walker/bobby Driscoll (8.3) The Last Chance (Switz.-1945) - Ewart G. Morrison/John Hoy/Ray Reagan (6.4) Minesweeper (1943) - Richard Arlen/Jean Parker/Russell Hayden (5.7) The Navy Way (1944) - Robert Lowery/Jean Parker/William Henry (7.2) One of our Aircraft is Missing (UK-1942) - Godfrey Tearle/Eric Portman/Peter Ustinov (bit part) (7.2) Spitfire ("The First Of The Few") (UK-1942) - Leslie Howard/David Niven/Rosamund John

Features & image quality are inconsistent. Best are: Gung Ho, Spitfire, One of Our Aircraft is Missing, Last Chance & Adventures of Tarfu. The rest are forgettable.

If you enjoy anything and everything WWII, you will enjoy this set. I'd give it 3 stars, due to the picture quality of the films, but the content is great. What can you expect from movies filmed during the war. This set was a great addition! Sit down and enjoy.

The Heroes of war was the ultimate disappointment as well as the 50 Combat Movie Pack. The movies were vintage all right but not any where close to popular classics. The DVD i tried playing on the AQIOUS Blue Ray player by Sharp and it wouldn't even load correctly. The movies are lame all but a couple. Hope you don't feel like I did, ripped off.

I gave this video and one of the other big war collections to my 80 year old Dad. He is having the time of his life. The poor quality (I warned him ahead of time) has not bothered him in the slightest.
If you are looking for a gift for the old guy, and he likes war movies, this is the real deal.

Interesting window into the role of film in WW2; the propaganda is a bit more subtle than one might expect, and there is hope for a peaceful post-war world.
