5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting coverage of the heroin drug, history, photos, excellent information, December 15, 2010
This series is of much value in tracing the history of illicit drug use, since before Christ until today. The history of the use of morphine and opium is given attention in the opening chapters of this book. Heroin was marketed as a cough medicine at one time, and in the 1800s became popular, along with other narcotics, opium derivatives, and cocaine.

The Civil War used copious amounts of narcotics as painkillers to wounded soldiers. Heroin ended up as an illicit street drug. Methadone is also explained in this work. Anyone researching drugs and the history of drugs, its modern use and affect on society, as well as individuals, will benefit from this work. The illustrations/photos, are excellent. The photos make the book worth reading all on their own.
