High marks to the folks at MB for this latest expansion set. A decent value with a welcome new terrain and rules - though these new rules are fairly pedestrian.
Volcarren Wasteland contains a 25-pc terrain expansion (Lava Field terrain pieces of 7 hexes (x4), 2 hexes (x5) and 1 hex (x5), plus 11 Molten Lava terrain pieces of 1 hex ) along with a squad of 3 Obsidian Guard units and a rule/scenario book. Lava Field hexes cause units to roll for damage if they stop their turn there - Molten Lava is deadly (95%) chance to units other than Obsidian Guards (or flying creatures, of course). The Obsidian Guards are a 100-pt squad with a lava immunity, ranged attack when on lava, and reduced defense when on water hexes.
The components are the usual high quality - I was mildly (and pleasantly) surprised to find that the "Molten Lava" tiles had a pattern to them instead of simply being red versions of the water tiles - and both terrains have a nice appealing look. I wish the squad card was printed on a bit thicker stock, but it is OK. The Obsidian Guard units are a bit tricky to get out of the package - they're in tight - and I was concerned about breaking one during removal, but all came out fine.
Supposedly, this is a Toys R Us / Amazon exclusive... there were plenty when I shopped, so I was able to grab two (as a previous review suggested) but this certainly won't last long. A must-have for any "serious" Heroscape players, and well worth the attention for almost any HS owner. Run, don't walk, to your nearest retailer or e-tailer to grab this expansion. (Hey - aren't you shopping now?)

Lava Lovers Rejoice, September 23, 2005

The lava set is fun, but it would be nice if it had more actual terrain. It is nice to finally see terrain with an effect other than water, but the lava isn't that threatening.
It also features the Obsidian Guards who are probably overpriced for their capabilities unless you have lava; even then, they're still on the edge of cost vs. effectiveness.
If you do stock up on lava, then be sure to check out Brunak from the Heroes of Laur expansion, he's the only other lava safe creature so far. He's also good without lava.

Nice to see they are mixing it up a bit. The only problem I have with this set (if any) is that if you are wanting to do alot with it, you basicly should buy two of them to add more of the tiles.. Other than that its a great!

Pros greatly outweigh the cons, October 27, 2005

This is a great set to get with the master set. There is only one tiny flaw, though. In use with the master set, your Obsidian Guards won't have much anywhere to go to use their effect. Basically, if you really want to play with the Obsidian Guards, I recommend buying at least two sets, due to the lack of terrain hexes included. Also, when playing, I reccommend you to only use these Guards when YOU make the board yourself to fully bring out the power they have.

Volcarron Wasteland-- reviewed, October 27, 2005

Yet another excellent expanse for the Heroscape game system. The new magma fields and molten lava tiles add new risks and strategic options to the game. The Obsidian Guard squad that comes with the set is powerful but specialized,i.e. without molten lava to power their special attack they are only moderately useful. All in all fine product.

I love the volcarren wastleland pieces and the "lava dudes". They take the game to another level. Imagine having a volcano on your game board!
In addition, they are of the same quality as the rest of the merchandise and Heroscape is fun to play, no matter what your age.

I think this is a really neat expansion to the Heroscape game. Although I did step on one of the pieces and broke it, but other than that its a lot of fun to play with.
