4.0 out of 5 stars Just like Heroscape: Modular and flexible, July 25, 2006
This review is from: Heroscape Wall and Tower Building Pack (Toy)
The new Castle/Wall Packs look to be the usual for Heroscape: flexible and modular. The Hasbro convention display set up at ComicCon (July 06) was astounding. There was a huge castle on display made from six of these "Fortress of the Archkyrie" Castle Packs. Just like a Lego set, you can buy as much or as little as you want to build the size of fortress(es) you desire. For $28 you get 141 pieces in a basic Castle and Wall Pack:

* 7 Straight (wall-to-wall) Bases (single hex size)
* 10 Corner Bases (single hex size)
* 4 End-of-Wall Bases (single hex size)
* 7 Straight Wall sections (attach atop bases, 9 levels tall, single hex width)
* 10 Corner Wall sections (attach atop bases, 9 levels tall, single hex width)
* 4 End Wall sections (attach atop bases, 9 levels tall, single hex width)
* 21 single-space Wall Walks (attach atop wall sections). All wall walk spaces grant +3 movement bonuses just like the road terrain from the Return to the Forgotten Forest road/trees expansion pack.)
* 1 nine-space Wall Walk (attaches atop wall sections or hangs out over wall sections)
* 1 seven-space Wall Walk (goes atop wall sections or hangs out over them)
* 50 Battlements (each is one "facet/side" of a hex in width, 2 levels tall. Attach to wall walks or any game hex terrain). Movement over them or shooting from behind them works just like the bridge walls from the Road to the Forgotten Forest expansion pack.
* 1 opening/closing massive Fortress Doorway. 3 hexes wide and 10 levels tall.
* 1 Fortress Door. Has special opening/closing rules and has its own defense for sieges against it. If it is destroyed it easily removes from play so armies can flood the castle.
* 1 flag (Jandar design)
* 1 Fortress Door card. (Has the special defense stats for whichever player controls the door)
* 1 sliding bar for door. Keeps the door closed from intruders.
* 22 single-rung Ladder pieces. Each is one "facet/side" of a hex in width. 2 levels tall. Each rung take one movement point to climb, rather than the two movement points regular terrain would cost to climb. Figures can end their movement on a ladder as the design will hold them in place. Make the ladders as tall or as many as you want. Other special movement and fighting rules for the ladders are in the Rulebook.

This looks to be a good value for the money and will be highly desired addition to a Heroscape terrain/battlefield collection. Decoration is a little plain but this should allow it to blend with many types of creations for various kinds of armies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Great addition, August 24, 2006
This review is from: Heroscape Wall and Tower Building Pack (Toy)
This is another great addition to the heroscape line and it brings some ingenious technology with it. The wall pieces are kind of like giant hex pieces which you can slide together just like the original hex pieces to make castle walls. They stack side to side and on top of each other allowing for larger walls.

You can also attach ladders to the sides of these pieces to allow access to the top of them.

The set comes with several road pieces that have a special bottom allowing them to be attached to the top of the wall pieces making a roof on the walls for units to stand on. With some smaller pieces that can be attached to the sides of these roofs making castle battlements.

The castle door comes with a card and special rules for damaging it and a flag piece is included in case you want to create some capture the flag scenarios.

My only concerns with this product is that there really are some smaller pieces than the other heroscape sets so be careful with young kids and this set. Finally, the tops of the wall pieces latch to each other and over time may become weakened or break off. I'm hoping not as this set is going to add a new dimension to heroscape fun!

Outside of those minor concerns this is a must for the heroscape fan and I'm eager to try these new sets out which I just got from Amazon yesterday!

4.0 out of 5 stars Some assembly required... and a "safe" set to give as a gift, October 19, 2006
By
This review is from: Heroscape Wall and Tower Building Pack (Toy)
Serious cool points for this customizable expansion set. These ain't no Playskool pieces. Each *single* hex requires one or two wall sections, a base, a walk tile, and at least two battlement pieces. Assembly is definitely more difficult than Legos, and there's always a concern that one of the snap-together pieces will snap off. Small children and impatient adults won't like putting it together, and the castle is probably better stored as a cool diorama, rather than disassembled back into the box. The cover on the box may be misleading. With the set's 21 single-wall sections and 3-piece doorway I was able to make a one-level 5x7 hex castle, with a few spare wall sections. That's not small, but hardly the castle implied on the box cover. I haven't played the castle set -- but I'm having plenty of fun putting this piece-happy monstrosity together.

I should mention that, if you're shopping for a gift for a HeroScape addict who already has a few expansion sets, this is the "safest" set to give. Even if you give a castle set to someone who already owns one, it will be a very welcome gift. Unlike other sets, multiple castle sets work *very* well together, and help your local HeroScape player build his dream castle. I'm definitely going to buy another set -- or two -- if it goes on sale!
