Yummy fraction fun!!,

This review is from: The Hershey's Milk Chocolate Bar Fractions Book (Paperback)
I am doing a lesson plan involving fractions for a graduate school class and this book really inspired me. With this book, you can not only introduce fractions, but can have the children adding and subtracting along with the book. The chocolate bar also gets the children more interested in learning about fractions...it is fun for all!!!

The Hershey's Milk Chocolate Bar Fractions Book,

An excellent book to help parents or teachers teach fractions. The candy bar is a great manipulative. You can always make a copy of the candy bar that is provided in the book for your child to work with if you do not have or want to buy a Hershey bar. A must have.

Chocolate Fever, Anyone?,

Although Chocolate Fever is the name of a book, most childrenwould be DELIGHTED to contract this fever! As elementary school teacher, I have used Hershey Bars and their wrappers to teach fractions for years. The kids LOVE it! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to parents as a primary teaching tool or as an enrichment resource. It not uses pictures of the Hershey Bar to show several fractions in twelfths, but explains their relationship to the whole. For example, 3/12 + 9/12= 12/12=1. On one page it shows two ways to name a fraction-- as the fraction itself and in simplest form (reduced to lowest terms), although it doesn't say so in exactly those words. At the end, the author shows 13/12, and says that more than one whole candy bar would be used. I like this book because it can be easily adapted for use with older children by including mixed numbers, writing fractions in simplest form, and even decimals/percentages. Also, I enjoyed the inclusion of facts and questions about The Hershey Candy Company and the ingredients used, as well as where cacao trees grow. This book could also be used as part of a unit about chocolate! Buy it and enjoy the fun as you eat your Hershey Bar!

The Hershey's Milk Chocolate Bar Fractions Book,

This review is from: The Hershey's Milk Chocolate Bar Fractions Book (Paperback)
This is a really fun read for parents and elementary age children. The illustrations help parents easily explain the concept of fractions, and they learn a few things, too. The only downside is if you don't have a REAL chocolate bar to experiment on while you read this book. The blatant product endoresment might bother some parents, but at least it's not Pokemon.

This is a great book!,

The Hershey's Milk Chocolate Fractions Book will help teach children the concept of dividing a whole into fractions in a fun and wonderful way. It begins with a huge Hershey bar being unwrapped to show it's 12 blocks. Each page takes away a fraction of the bar. The remaining fraction is colorfully illustrated by a crew of little people who cart their painting tools from page to page, leaving paint spills and footprints. I read this book to a class of 3rd graders just getting into fractions and they loved it. We used our math manipulatives to see the fractions as they were broken down. It was a wonderful way to begin a lesson!

Great Class Activity,

I have gone into the classrooms of 4 of my children when they were in 3rd grade and learning fractions armed with this book and a Hershey's bar for each child. I use cardboard cutouts in the shape of the Hershey's bar and use the overhead projector. It's a fun project and a great book that makes the kids excited about fractions, and gives the teacher a little, much-deserved, break.

I was a little disappointed in this book. I had hoped that it would be more challenginging for the students. It would have to be used with students who have just learned fractions and who are learning to add fractions at the time. It is lower level Math. I am glad I didn't pay full price for it.

Although I rarely use the book anymore, it served as a great resource for helping my students understand fractions. It works best if you actually have the chocolate to break up.

Great way to wrap a fractions unit,

I teach 1st graders. I have read reviews on this book that say it is confusing for children to learn fractions from. I do not rely on this book as my only way to teach fractions to my students, but rather as a component to teaching fractions. I use it at the end of the year as a review, so by the time I read it to my students they already have a pretty good understanding of fractions. I then give them each a chocolate bar & we practice breaking it into equal parts. I've never had a problem with the chocolate bars melting.
