5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to teach kids the basics of measurement!
This is an excellent book to help kids learn the basics of measurement. As an elementary school teacher, I have been using this book year after year and I have definitely seen the great results reflected in the standardized tests scores (as opposed to those teachers who have not used this book and have struggled to make kids aware of measurement units).

1.0 out of 5 stars This is appalling
Teach your kid to use Weights and Measures and poison him/herself with sugar and empty calories at the same time!
Perhaps Hershey's should also create a book on Dental Hygiene,
weight control and the advantages of hyperactivity.

I suppose this is approved by the Bush administration's Dept. of Education. Anything to keep corporate America happy...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to teach kids the basics of measurement!, December 23, 2007
This review is from: Hershey's Milk Chocolate Weights and Measures (Paperback)
This is an excellent book to help kids learn the basics of measurement. As an elementary school teacher, I have been using this book year after year and I have definitely seen the great results reflected in the standardized tests scores (as opposed to those teachers who have not used this book and have struggled to make kids aware of measurement units).

This book shows the kids what a centimeter, a decimeter, etc look like as well as the standard units like an inch, a yard, and so on. This book makes kids visualize measurement units in a very clear way by comparing a centimeter with an M&M candy, or an inch with a miniature hershey chocolate. In the second part of the book, it shows kids weight units as well.

I fully disagree with the other reviewer of this book (who I am rather positive is not a teacher and has never struggled with teaching measurement to kids). This book is not intended to be used every day feeding kids with chocolates or candies, but to be used only once so that kids understand the concepts in an appealing and fun way, and it is our duty like teachers to subsequently reinforce the learning with other exercises not related to sugar intaking.

This book is a must for every elementary school teacher who needs to teach math and is concerned about their kids' progress. But don't take my word for it. Give it a try and see for yourself!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hershey's Weights and Measures, July 28, 2008
A fun way for young students to see the concept of weights and measures. Of course it makes you hungry for some chocolate, but after a session of learning what a cool way to end the study.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Introduction to Elementary Math Principles, October 2, 2011
This review is from: Hershey's Milk Chocolate Weights and Measures (Paperback)
Jerry Pallotta is perhaps best known for his prolific alphabet books, and he has also written a number of books introducing elementary math concepts. In this one, standard weight, size and volume measures are illustrated using Hershey's candy pieces as examples. The book includes a bit of humor ("This pile is a ton of Twizzlers cherry flavored Nibs -- do not eat them all at once"), and Rob Bolster's images of candies are realistic enough to provoke the reader's appetite.

This isn't a storybook, and it may not be a hit as a read-aloud more than once. However, as a math lesson it can't be beat, especially if the teacher is able to have a little chocolate on hand to cement the experience in memory. Of course, children with sugar sensitivity or those who struggle with appetite control may not benefit from this book as much as others.
