4.0 out of 5 stars Let's not forget Bellow, December 17, 2010
This review is from: Herzog (Penguin Great Books of the 20th Century) (Paperback)
With all the 'potato love' for Jonathan Franzen these days it makes me wonder if Americans have forgotten some of the great classics that paved the way for his 'prescient' prose. HERZOG is one such example. Mind you, I did get bogged down in some of Bellow's philosophical diatribes but all in all, a hilarious read and certainly a more interesting one than anything Mr. Franzen can conjure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Moses Herzog is the quintessential protean man., June 19, 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: Herzog (Penguin Great Books of the 20th Century) (Paperback)
This is a great book--watch those changes from first to third person within the same paragraph! Check out Robert J. Lifton's "Protean Self" for a complete analysis of how Moses Herzog is the quintessential protean man. (Proteus was the Greek god who could change form to suit his circumstances.)
