The soundtrack to my misspent youth..., September 20, 2010
This review is from: He's After Me (Audio CD)
At a time when a lot of bands were going into the studio before they even gigged the Hang Ups showed remarkable patience. They played most of these songs countless times live from 1990-93 before recording them in this seminal cd. The 12 songs here are remarkably strong from start to finish, Brian's amazing melodies and the unabashed pop harmonies make this one of the great undiscovered joys in music and the perfect antidote to the grunge scene that dominated at the time.
I've managed to convert several people to the Hangs Ups over the years, the people who like them really like them a LOT. One writer friend of mine would play this cd on repeat for 7-8 hours straight while he worked.
I'm a fan of the other Hang Ups cds but this one is will always be special. Its the musical distillation of all those nights in the beer and smoke soaked 7th Street Entry, standing in the dark with a cadre of like minded souls, hopelessly and happily out of step with the loud grunge that was often blasting from 1st Ave's main stage.
Its been out of print for years but if you can get a hold of it you certainly should before they disappear.

great band, October 20, 1999

these guys really are for the faint of heart! they have a gentle touch and haunting, bittersweet hooks even when they fully engage their distortion pedals. these guys aren't cheesy, nor are they particularly greasy, but they're worth a f**k
