A knight in shining armor,

When an artist proclaims "He's Back" as Sir Lawrence does on this fabulous 20 tune collection, I always snarkily wonder "Oh, really? Where's he been?" Well, the answer in Lawrence Haynes case is that he was out earning a living with his hands, building and fixing homes, all the while building a hefty catalog of bluesy, soulful tunes.My favorite is Cheating Is A Risky Business wherein his affair with a younger woman leads to "Judge Coldblooded" giving his ex everything! Not that I approve or condone cheating, but man, oh man does Sir Lawrence get the shaft in this tale of woe. Then again, maybe he gets his just due because he growls the song I'm An Old Dog and yes, with all the salacious behavior exhibited by Sir Lawrence on this one, it makes me think his ex might have had a good case! There is over an hour of great music on this disc. Other stand- outs are Checking Out Checking In, Him Or Me and Walking Papers. The album closes with the rousing gospel-tinged Keep Looking Up. After repeated listening I can tell you that my verdict is that Sir Lawrence is a knight in shining armor fighting the good fight for Blues and Southern Soul |
