Before there were Riot Grrls, there was a Columbus-based indie band called Scrawl playing truly glorious punk rock. Marcy Mays: lead guitar, vocals; Sue Harshe: bass, vocals; Caroline O'Leary: drums. This CD is a combination of their first two (vinyl) albums, from 1987 and 1988. In many ways He's Drunk/Plus, Also, Too is their best work, emphasizing the vocal harmonies between Marcy and Sue. I tripped across this CD in the library, and loved it so much that I kept it. It took me years to find a used replacement to return to the library. This CD also converted me to a Scrawl fan, catching their live shows and buying all their other CDs.

My favorite tracks on this CD range from the slow and sweet (I'm Ready; For Your Sister) to the fast and urgent (Breaker, Breaker; Green Beer). Humor and pain shine through the lyrics. Scrawl's sound has matured over the years, leading the AMG to call their 1993 album Velvet Hammer their best, although I think the best of Scrawl's mature sound is split between 1996's Travel On, Rider and 1998's Nature Film.
