Pray for Keith,
By Def Squad Fan "from the Legion of Doom" (PORTLAND, OR United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: He's Keith Murray (Audio CD)
This is not a typical Keith Murray Album. He is obviously trying to make a commercial friendly album with as many radio cuts as possible. It's not what I want out of Keith Murray album but it's easy for me to talk cuz I'm not Keith. Keith has three successful Albums out and he is still broke. He's got attorney fees, and a bad reputation in the industry. I don't blame him for trying this kind of Album. People have to eat. Pray for Keith that he can find that happy medium between artistic integrity and financial success.

What Happened To The Most Beautifullest?,
By S. Sidhu (Perth, AUS) - See all my reviews
This review is from: He's Keith Murray (Audio CD)
I first heard Mr. Murray on LL's "I Shot Ya (Remix)" in '95. To this day, that still remains one of the cleverest and thrilling verses ever spat out on a posse cut. Murray's style of machine gun rapping juxtaposed with intelligent, provocative, and cleverly masterminded lyrics have always grabbed my attention. He remains to be in a league of his own, though often compared to his Def Squad brethren Redman. I have always thought of Murray with a unique, underrated skill of rhyming - extremely different to the rappers of his time. Unfortunately "Hes Keith Murray" doesn't show the potential this emcee has. For one thing, this album sounds like a weak attempt of Keith "selling out" and becoming more commercialised. It lacks the raw production beats that appeared in his previous three albums, which collaborated almost synchronously with his unrefined style. Instead, what we hear is polished and clean-cut overproduced beats which seem to overwhelm and stamp all over Murray's voice and lyrics. Even the production by Def Jam's Erick Sermon seems to add on to the disappointment of this album, and the only thing that saves Murray is a guest appearance by Busta Rhymes who steals the entire show("On Smash"). The lyrics are obtuse and the punchlines and weak - Murray always had a way with words, and his way of getting the point across was second to none on previous albums. Even his lyrical content seems too ordinary- nothing here hasn't been done before. The overall ablum seems to be oversaturated by the style of most commercialised rappers and it makes me sad to think that an MC of Murray's talent would be wasted this way. But as a big fan of Murray, it will not stop me listening to him and hoping for a better improvement on his next release. People who really want to hear Murray at his best, please listen to "The Most Beautifullest Hits", a collection of his greatest works from `93-'99.

Child Of The Streets...Where Will You Lay Your Head?,
By Enlightened "Both Eyes Closed, see what u don... (Atlanta Georgia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: He's Keith Murray (Audio CD)
Keith Murray has long been one of my favorite rappers. Ever since The Most Beautifullest Thing, I have always eagerly anticipated a Keith Murray release. This one was no different. Unlike most, I had the little Free Keith Murray stuff, people down heya was like `He's Wack'. Till they came out with Fatty Girl that is and they recognized the skill. And we had to wait two years to get this album...and when it finally arrives, the album gets pushed back, Murray gets booted from the label, and Def Jam barely promotes the album if at all. So what do we get? An artist whose songs get played on the radio ( Candi Bar, Yeah Yeah U Know IT, Da Bunk Song) and on video; but people have no clue when the album comes out or if it dropped already. Sad...because this has pretty much been the routine throughout Keith Murray's career. But you know Keith Murray never fails to deliver. His style, as expected after a 5 year hiatus in the rap industry, has changed a little. He's not the hostile mic strangler anymore, instead he talks more about current events and his life. This gives him more dimensions than he had when he started out trying to be the illest. This makes this album more `listenable', meaning you don't have to be in a certain mood to listen to it like his other album `Enigma'. Every song is solid and you can let the album play the whole way through without skippage. The thing that holds down this album is the skits...on "It's A Beautiful Thing", the skits were hilarious...here, they are just wack...and of course they slow down the pace of the album (It clocks in at a smooth 51 minutes). With this album, Keith Murray is just shaking off his rust. You better believe come next album K. Murray will deliver his classic to the public...and I'll be right there waiting.
