This is my second HP deskjet and I'm pleased with the printing quality of both (the other is an 895Cse). I bought the second printer because I have two computers in separate locations.

After using the 990Cxi for a few weeks, if I had to do it over, I think I'd buy the 970. I don't use the automatic paper sensor option very often (how often do you switch papers? and oh by the way, manual switching involves 3 mouse clicks), I use the wireless printing option even less so the only thing left is speed. for $100 more, Hmmmmm.

The last little Gem that you'll discover is the cost of the replacement (color) cartridge for the 990 (or 970 - same one). At Costco or Sam's Club they are $50 for the large (c6578a) ones.

Still, the printing quality is excellent even on plain paper. With photopaper you can't tell the difference between real photos and the printed copy. Photo Ret II (or the newer III) is the way to go.

Having said all of that, I still like these HP printers.

I was happy with this printer until it suddenly stopped working. That was over two weeks ago. I called HP and the technician decided that HP would need to send a replacement. I was told I would receive the replacement in 5 to 7 days. After 2 weeks I called again. The replacement had not been shipped and they had no plan or timeframe for replacing my printer. Since I didnt seem to be going away, they finally transferred me to "CORPORATE". The person who answered the CORPORATE phone said that a "CASE MGR" would be assigned and that the Case Managers usually resolve these problems to everyone's satisfaction with in 24 hours. After 24 hours no case manager had called, much less resolved the problem. I called HP again and was told that no case manager had been assigned. Now I have a new time frame, I have been told that someone has now been assigned, but the person I talked to did not know that persons name or phone number. I am supposed to be called within 4 to 24 hours. Right!

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't forget to buy a printer cable, November 17, 2000

Great printer-- fast and very quiet. Installation was simple, and the "getting started" overview was sufficient to avoid reading any manuals at all. Try HP's high-end photo paper at least once if you print digitial photographs-- the automatic paper sensing makes this as simple as just loading the paper in the tray.

Remember to buy a USB or parallel printer cable-- that's the one thing they didn't include in the box.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple printer with professional results, November 10, 2000
This review is from: Hewlett Packard 990Cxi DeskJet Printer (Office Product)
This printer is a no brainer. It has great fuctionality. Inside of the printer it has a blue laser that automatically aligns the cartridges and it also detects what kind of paper you have in it!!!! It is amazing. No longer do you need to find the properties to change the paper type. And it does an awesome job when it comes to printing photo albums and large reports. This is the best HP printer YET (HP Photosmart 1218 is equally as awesome!!!) I had a lexmark and when i saw this one print i donated it to the salvation army!!

Received my 990Cxi yesterday and immediately started to use it. Used the 2 sided feature to print out the user's manual and it worked beautifully. I was able to install the software with no problem at all. My old printer was like a model "T" automobile compared with the 990. The print and colors are great.Quite and fast. Very happy with my purchase

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Text, Photos and Gray Scale Output! Cons: Read Below, December 19, 2001

I just hooked this printer up last week after receiving it as a gift, purchased right here at Amazon. The free shipping made it the best price on the net at the time of purchase a couple of weeks ago. Win XP found a driver right off the bat, but you should install the latest driver from the HP web site as I did for the best performance. Smooth Installation!! I have an HP952C that I have been using for a couple of years now. The output of this HP990CXI is basically the same as the much older 952C for photos printed in 1200x2400/best mode on photo paper. (952C now only costs around $125.00 if you look around) It uses the same model ink tanks as the 952C.

This printer really stands out on the output speed. Don't believe the speeds you read in ads or even on the box. Those speeds are in draft mode output. I print most of my text in draft mode now with this 990CXI on (standard copy machine paper)and you would have thought it came right out of a laser printer. I could not believe that! Very nice job HP. Speed and quality even in draft mode, but that is for black and white text only! Any other printing you do should be set to normal for great output but there goes the ppm output speed. It falls to a much slower rate. I have been a digital photo freak for a few years now. The only way to print great looking photos on either of these printers is to use photo-matte or photo-glossy paper. The speed is noticeably faster than the 952C when set on 1200x2400 / best output. But not an extra $160+ worth of speed over the 952C cost. I prefer the matte paper as it dries quickly, never leaves any finger prints from handling the pictures and just looks better in my opinion.

CON: The 990CXI is suppose to automatically select the printer paper for you. Paper, best settings etc. for the print job at hand. This printer FAILS HORRIBLY in doing so. Horrible, Horrible, Horrible.. This printer driver and or printer gets an "F" in that department from me. May be a new driver when released will cure this set back, but I would not bet on it.

Besides the above mentioned complaint, this printer is an excellent choice for the home or small business user that demands superior quality in their printing needs. I gave this 990CXI a 4 out of 5 star rating due to the fact that the paper selector does not work and I did not have to pay for it. If I had to pay my own money for it I would have gave it a 3 out of 5 stars. Why pay hard earned money for something that does not work as advertised?? I would wait a year or so for the price to fall $100.00 less than it is now before I spent my hard earned money on this printer. The price will fall quickly, as they always do in the computer industry. If you want to be able to say that you have the latest and greatest speed wise (sold as not networkable, but it can be done with extra hardware) printer HP has to offer, this is for you. Hope this review helped.. From a fellow techie to you. Happy Holidays!!

5.0 out of 5 stars fast & wonderful color accuracy, November 15, 2001
This review is from: Hewlett Packard 990Cxi DeskJet Printer (Office Product)
i am a freelance computer graphic artist that works on a mac. i work in pre-production and on shoots for commercials in the NYC area. i needed a printer that was reliable and fast at high-quality printing, especially from adobe illustrator and photoshop. after much research and within my price range, i chose the 990cxi. it did not disappoint!

i used to be en epson person. i always recommended epsons to the compaies i have worked for. but the HP caught my eye during one particular shoot. it was so fast! my last printer was, unfortunately, a Lexmark Z52 (boo!). this printer had no internal memory and therefore would take a long time (and i mean long - 20 mintues!) and a lot of hard drive space when printing my huge files. the software offers the barebones minimum for printing options. also, the color accuracy was so off, i otten had to pay for the files to be color-corrected before they went to the final printer. this is NOT the case with my new HP! the color management using the ColorSync option is fantastic! and i can't say enough about how fast it is at high quality! also, though epson documents look incredible, especially using epson paper, they often would have little quirky problems, printing extra lines, the ink doesn't last very long, it leaks on the paper where it shouldn't. again, not a problem with the HP 990cxi.

also, i was concerned with this HP only having a three-color ink cartridge. but the color accuracy proves this is not an issue! i did have some problems printing from illustrator though. but with the uppdated driver that i downloaded from HP and re-loading adobe illustrator, it was fixed. and i still use epson paper (the heavyweight matte is my favorite).

i give this printer 5 stars for being such a pleasant surprise!

This printer is excellent for printing photos on photo paper, very quiet, double-sided printing. The only problem I found is that when I use Epson Photo Paper it doesn't work very well. HP Photo Paper is preferred. The infrared printing is great. I can print from my Handspring Prism anytime. I used to have a 970cxi before this one and the only difference is the infrared, auto-paper sensor, speed, and the looks of course. All other features are the same. I recommend this printer.
