5.0 out of 5 stars Works great and easy to install!, October 5, 2005
This review is from: Hewlett Packard/Compaq USBCB USB 2.0 Port PCMCIA Cardbus Adapter (Personal Computers)
I have a Compaq Presario 2100 laptop with the old 1.1 USB connection. I take hundreds of pictures for my son's baseball team and have to copy them from the compact flash cards. It took usually took 10-15 minutes to copy a 512MB card and with this USB Adaptor it took 1-2 minutes! I was very excited!

The card was very easy to install... I just inserted it into the PCMCIA slot and XP recognized it immediately! I have also plugged in my printer and the pictures print much faster.

It does come with a power cord. I haven't tried anything that uses the USB Drive for power, so I don't know it it's required or not.

I chose this adaptor because I have had trouble with other hardware in the past that caused my laptop to reboot for no particular reason. This one was a little more expensive than some of the other ones, but since it's from HP/Compaq I thought that would reduce my chances of having problems.

I am very satisfied and would definitely recommend this product to others.

You can't just plug it in and have it work - what the advertisement doesn't show you is the wall-wart needed to power the card. The laptop PCMCIA slot can't provide the juice. This may be a deal breaker for some.

While others have had success in getting this card to work, I did not. I was trying to connect an external hard drive -- a 12 V accessory, to this card. I have read of cautions that others have had problems, but the favorable reviews for this card led me to take a chance. The first card I got, I was told by technical support, was defective. The manufacturer replaced the card (as long as I sent a check for postage to them first). Unfortunately, nothing I did it made a second card work either. CompUSA did accept the return and refunded me the purchase price of the object -- but not the original postage-- even though the card didn't work. Perhaps if you're trying to connect a low-voltage item to your older laptop computer this card may work, but it didn't work with an external 12 V hard drive in my laptop.
