Like some of Hewlett-Packard's other ink-jet models, the 712C uses a space-saving case design that fits neatly on most desks. Paper enters the printer from a 100-page input tray, which extends horizontally from the front, and exits directly over the top into an output tray. The input tray's adjustable guides allow for legal-size paper, envelopes, and special-size media as narrow as 3 inches. This tray also pulls out to allow for easy reloading. Consistent with Hewlett-Packard's latest designs, the DeskJet 712C features a switch that allows the input tray to handle continuous banner paper.
Loading ink into the DeskJet 712C couldn't be simpler. When you lift the cover, the ink cartridges automatically move to the center of the unit for easy access. Side-by-side black and tricolor cartridges insert securely using obvious green release levers. Because cartridges contain both the ink reservoir and nozzle, they won't make a mess when you change them.
Black text prints at up to 600 x 600 dpi, and the unit uses Hewlett-Packard's Photo Ret II technology to provide brilliant color. The DeskJet 712C's output is impressive for the printer's price. Text is crisp with smooth curves, and photographic output is well balanced and realistic. Because no application software is included with the DeskJet 712C, you'll need your own programs to design colorful creations. But if you're just looking for a way to add quality output to your system, this is a wise and affordable solution.

Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 712C Color Ink Jet Printer,
By P.B.Stone (Portland, Oregon USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hewlett Packard DeskJet 712C Color Inkjet Printer (Office Product)
I have had my HP 712C for nearly 3 years, and it has proven to be very reliable with no problems what so ever. This is my first printer, and because of the low cost I was very suprised at the quality of the print. The black & white text is professional quality, the color is true, and the color photographs are very nice. The biggest negative is the printing speed. Text is fast but graphics will try your patience. I believe that this is a great first printer for anyone. It is easy to use, easy to load fresh ink modules and paper. This is a good printer that I have been very happy with and would recommend.

OUTSTANDING INKJET PRINTER,
By "aclawbear" (Stafford, Va) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hewlett Packard DeskJet 712C Color Inkjet Printer (Office Product)
I purchased a 712c HP injet printer so long ago I can't tell you when it was but it has been an outstanding printer. Never have any problems with it no matter what Windows(95, 98 or Me)I have used. You can print great colored pictures on it. I have a digital camera and it prints great 5x7 pictures and smaller ones. They look like I have had them developed. My only draw back right now is that I print a lot of pictures or picture cards so the printing speed is to slow for me for color printing. I wish HP would take trade-ins for a new Printer because this printer is in the same shape it was in when I purchased it and have not ever had to have it worked on. I just print a lot of pictures so I need a faster printer.

Paper Jams Galore!,
By jC "noktrnlcrechur" (Northern VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hewlett Packard DeskJet 712C Color Inkjet Printer (Office Product)
I've used this printer for years now, probably almost a decade. Early on I noticed the color printing was EXTREMELY slow, so I have only used it for BW prints for the past couple of years. When it was new and for about 3-4 years following, it never had a paper jam. It sucked up color ink after just a few dozen prints though.
Now it is, as I've said previously, much later in its years of usage, and I cannot print anything without it getting jammed. Even when I hand-feed it, at times it will shrivel up the paper brutally. Having been a (procrastinating) student in the past, it was to my horror to attempt to print out a paper due in class soon, and realize that it would completely fail to print at all after too many paper jams. For its earlier years, I think it was a great product for the price. But throw it away after a decade or so aye.
