4.0 out of 5 stars Finally a refurbished computer at a realistic price, February 14, 2002

This review is from: Hewlett-Packard Kayak XA Desktop (450-MHz, Pentium III, 192 MB RAM, 6.4 GB hard drive) (Personal Computers)
Of all the computers listed here that do not have an operating
system, this is the only one I cannot buy as a new "barebones"
system at any one of several sites on the net.
There are also other sites that offer the same ridiculous prices for "used" computers.
I can buy all the parts and build a P4/1.8GHZ/DDR333/
PC3000@366MHZ-DDRAM/40GB HDD ATA133/Epox EP4SDA+(133ATA/RAID)MBD/
1.44 Floppy/CDRW/DVDROM/Sound Blaster LIVE 5.1(oem)/ and AGP/3D
video card (no speakers and no monitor) at the prices you are being offered here.
Used is used and when you consider the prices they are asking
remember that everything has a life span even computer parts.
If you have a P3 Chassis all you need for an upgrade is a P4
power supply(if yours isn't), a P4 motherboard, a P4 CPU/
Processor and the proper memory for the board.
If you don't want all the added performance of DDR memory you
can save if you buy a motherboard that uses the memory that is
in your old computer.(IE: SDRAM/SDDIMM or RDRAM/RDDIMM).

I have had my say so I will be on my way. Thanks for listening
and if I have enlightened anyone "Your welcome".

Best regards,
JDK
P.S. I wont be back here looking for bargains

2.0 out of 5 stars No Method to its Madness, December 31, 2001

With 6.4 GB of hardrive, 192 MB RAM, and 450 mhz, this machine makes no sense. What good is the fast 192 MB RAM when you only have 450 mhz and 6.4 GB hardrive. If you know nothing about computers, than I'll tell you that if your computer is 3 years old or newer, than it has atleast 20 GB hardrive. 450 mhz compared to my 950 Compaq. This belongs in a musuem as an ancient artifact, I didn't even know these were still in production. This computer gets 2 stars for programs. You would be crazy to purchase this computer for any price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Depending on your needs, this is a decent computer., January 28, 2002

Depending on what you are going to do with this computer, this could be more than enough machine for the average, and not so average user. For anyone who is new to computing, this computer will do anything you need it to. This machine has a workstation amount of RAM in it, which will allow you to bounce between multiple internet windows with out a care. This machine can run just about any operating system, including XP. I personally am going to use it as a Linux workstation/server. Don't fall prey to the computer industries unneeded emphasis on Intel architected MHz. This computer could be a sound investment for just about any user.
