Although ink-jet printers have steadily improved in printout quality, when you need the ultimate professional look, laser printers offer the best results, especially for text. HP continues its high standards of quality with the HP LaserJet 1100xi. Printouts are crisp and reveal high contrast. Setting up is easy--the HP LaserJet 1100xi works with Windows 3.1, 95, 98, and NT 4.0, and even with OS/2 and DOS.
The 1100xi is fully functional out of the box. It also has impressive expansion capabilities that are useful if your business or home office is growing or if you may need additional business machines in the future. Its 2 MB memory is expandable to 18 MB to handle even more complex documents. In addition, HP's exclusive JetPath technology lets you add optional copying and scanning capabilities without degrading the speed and copy quality.
The 1100xi offers a fast printing speed, high resolution, and expandable memory. The printer cable is included.
Our 20-page text-only test printout revealed that the LaserJet 1100 actually exceeds its rated 8-page-per-minute speed: I clocked it at 8.8ppm. That's faster than the rival NEC SuperScript 870. Print quality in draft, 300-dot-per-inch and 600dpi modes ranged from the high end of acceptable to razor-fine. Like the SuperScript 870, however, there's no 1200dpi mode.
Although the LaserJet 1100 offers a lot of the same features as the SuperScript 870, the LaserJet 1100 seems to have the edge in a few areas, including media cost. Toner for the LaserJet 1100 is $50 per cartridge, rated at 2,500 pages with 5% coverage. That's a slightly shorter per-cartridge life than the SuperScript 870, but at 2 cents per page, the LaserJet 1100 comes out slightly better on per-page costs. In addition, unlike the SuperScript 870, the LaserJet 1100 has a draft mode that can cut toner consumption in half.
The ability to print any document as a booklet is another intriguing feature, as is N-up printing, where up to 9 pages can be condensed onto one sheet.
For an additional $100, there's an extra module that can be snapped on to convert the LaserJet 1100 into a sheet-fed scanner that also makes copies.
Measuring 14.5 by 12.8 by 14.9 inches, the LaserJet 1100 is slightly larger than the SuperScript 870, but loads and dispenses paper vertically, so you don't need free space in front of or behind it when adding or removing paper. Equipped with 2MB of RAM, the LaserJet 1100 uses standard DIMMs and can easily be bumped up to 18MB.
The HP LaserJet 1100 has a slightly higher price tag than the NEC SuperScript 870, but it's more than justified by the extra features and lower per-page operating cost. The LaserJet 1100 easily earns a place on our WinList.

Love the printer, but the scanner and copier are outstanding,

The printer is performing admirably, but the built in scanner and OCR software is better then any OCR I've used. Unbelieveably easy to use, just insert the document and press a button on the printer. Then select the pop up menu choice, either OCR or just scan. THe rest is automatic. Terriffic value at this time

Great "home" or "small business" printer at a great price.,

The LJ1100 is a great printer for home or small business. It's MUCH faster than aDeskJet, and it isn't susceptible to smudges or blotches which can plague ink-based printers. Pros: small size, fast printing, high resolution. The drivers seem to work well, and they don't bring up any clumsy "toolbox" program every time you print something. Also, it prints on paper as small as 3x5 cards, which is great for checks or small envelopes. The toner cartridge installation couldn't be easier. Cons: None... yet. Although it has only one expansion spot for memory, so I'll have to make sure I get the right size if I upgrade. It uses a print cable which isn't compatible with the Centronics-style Ink Jet or Dot Matrix printers, but at least a 6-footer is included. Note: The 1100 does not scan or copy without the optional copy attachment. HP sells it as the 1100A if it has the scanner/copier built-in. Otherwise, the 1100 requires an optional piggy-back unit.

Great value.,

Great value. Usual HP quality, reasonable price. Be careful to cover printer when not in use. Dust enters through vertical paper feeder and can cause problems - double paper feeds and poor print quality. Otherwise excellent!
