To set up the 2100xi, we removed the protective shipping tape and padding, unpacked and inserted the included toner cartridge, and connected the AC power. We searched a long time for a Centronics parallel port to connect the printer to our PC before finding the port behind a plastic panel. Finally, we inserted the CD-ROM and followed the HP setup program. Except for the hidden port, the process was straightforward and intuitive.
To test the 2100xi, we printed text in a variety of fonts and sizes. All our samples were as laser-perfect as we would expect in a 1,200-dpi printer. We also printed graphics and artwork. The printer's monochrome interpretation of the originals' color was warm and smooth with little evidence of dotted halftoning or pixelation.
The printer is rated at 10 pages per minute and, in our tests, it performed at just under 9 pages per minute for both Best Quality and Fast Printing modes, indicating (as expected) that the paper path, not the print quality, limits the printer's maximum speed. However, the printer's built-in 66-MHz processor prevented processing delays and the draining of our desktop PC's system resources.
An especially handy feature is the Cancel Job button, which allows you to cancel the current printing job without having to open the Print Manager on your PC. The printer also has 4 MB standard, expandable to 52 MB, and a fast 4 Mbps IrDA port, allowing you to print from your laptop, or even Windows CE-based PDA, without a cable. (HP's Web site offers free software that you can download to your PDA for this purpose.)
With its sturdy construction, straightforward setup, fast printing, and beautifully sharp output, the 2100xi impressed us as a fine laser printer.

Ideal home/small office printer,
By Stephen M. Bainbridge "www.professorbainbridg... (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Hewlett Packard LaserJet 2100xi Printer (Office Product)
My IT people bought me the HP 2100 for use as a personal printer in my university office. I liked it so much that I bought one for my home office to replace an old HP 4L. It has been an excellent purchase and I highly recommend this printer. When working at home, I now have the print speed to download and print out legal decisions from the web or Lexis, which was too painful to contemplate with the slow speeds of the HP 4L. I get 8-10 pages per minute regardless of whether the printer is set for draft or top quality modes. So only the longest legal decisions take more than a couple of minutes. Of course, as a law professor, I'm not often printing out graphics intensive files. Charts and figures do slow down the print speed some, so a more graphics intensive user might want to look at alternatives. I'm also not using it in a network environment at home and, at work, I don't share it with other users. So, again, your mileage may vary. Both of my HP 2100 have been extremely reliable. They are quiet, the paper never jams, they have a reasonably large main paper tray, handle single sheet feeds fine. I've generated several camera ready texts on my HP 2100 using the top quality print settings and had no complaints from readers or publishers, So for a low-volume, mostly text setting, this seems like an ideal printer.

This printer is amazing!,

This review is from: Hewlett Packard LaserJet 2100xi Printer (Office Product)
The last reviewer who gave this one star has no idea what he's talking about. This is a spectacular printer, head and shoulders above a LaserJet 4. Quality is MUCH better, speed is much improved AND it's smaller overall. All the software worked perfectly out of the box. I just plugged it in and Windows2000 did it all. All I do is click "print" in Word and it's perfect.

This product is unsatisfactory,
By A Customer
This review is from: Hewlett Packard LaserJet 2100xi Printer (Office Product)
I bought this printer to replace an HP Laserjet 4. We print a lot of pictures of houses as we are real estate brokers & appraisers. The printer would not print the pictures in the 1200 x 1200 mode. The tech blamed it on the software. The printer also does not have paper recognition for the two available trays, so when you print out something in say MS word, you have to go tell it what tray to use everytime. We didn't have to do that with the HP Laserjet 4, the right tray was choosen automatically. This printer has a long way to go. We sent it back
