The Hewlett-Packard Color LaserJet 8550DN is an impressive workhorse for office habitats with the need for a network-ready, large-capacity color printer. This printer is ideal for all of your internal and departmental color printing needs--from marketing to CAD, from creative to finance. Automatic color calibration regulates the density of each color to give you a superior degree of color consistency from the first print to the last.

With the HP 8550DN, you can quickly and economically produce up to 12-by-18.5-inch pages on a wide variety of media and weights, including glossy and card stock. The 8550DN manages paper weights from 16-pound bond to 80-pound cover. It has an input capacity of up to 3,100 pages through four different input sources. To further boost speed and save time, the duplex unit allows printing on both sides of a page automatically.

The HP 8550DN offers 600 dpi resolution with HP Image Resolution Enhancement technology (HP ImageREt 2400), and offers fast multiple prints with RIP-once technology--all resulting in high-quality output. The printing speed is 6 ppm for full color on 8.5-by-11-inch and A4 documents, and 24 ppm for black-and-white documents. The built-in 3.2 GB hard disk can store very large printing jobs, and it ensures consistent, high-quality printing over the life of the printer.

The HP 8550DN is network-ready, with remote installation,configuration, and manageability. The process is made easy by HP WebJetAdmin. The 8550DN has drivers for Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0, Mac OS7.1 and above, OS/2, AutoCAD, and Windows 2000. It has 1 open EIOslot, an HP JetDirect card for Fast Ethernet 10/100Base-TX, and anoption for HP JetDirect 600N (EIO) internal print servers.

First, the pros: The HP-8550 is a marvel of design, comely, compact, yet robust enough for a high-output office. Color is reliable, and once calibrated correctly, excellent in fidelity!

The Cons: It is slow, seems to take forever to warm up, and although the mfgr's specs indicate 53 seconds for a color print, you could not prove it by ours. For a printer designed to produce up to 60,000 pages per month, it seems a bit finicky and tempermental. It is difficult to cancel a print job once it's sent, unless you trek over to the machine and manually push "cancel." The drum kits seem to use up way too soon, and are awkward to replace. Likewise the color cartridges.

All-in-all, it's a good printer, but for the expense, I would like to see some improvements.

This printer has it all. Great looks, it's fast, clear prints, everything! Maybe it's a little pricy, but it's worth the cash. Wether you print 500 pages a day or just 1 a week, this printer is the best. Everyone should own it.
