The Hewlett-Packard Color LaserJet 8550N is an impressive workhorse for offices needing a network-ready, large-capacity color printer. This printer is ideal for all of your internal and departmental color printing needs--from marketing to CAD, from creative to finance. And automatic color calibration regulates the density of each color to give you a superior degree of color consistency from the first print to the last.

With the HP 8550N, you can quickly and economically produce pages as large as 12-by-18.5-inches on a wide variety of media and weights, including glossy and card stock. The 8550N manages paper weights from 16-pound bond to 80-pound cover. It has an input capacity of up to 1,100 pages through 3 different input sources. To further boost speed and save time, you may want to consider purchasing the optional auto-duplex unit, which allows printing on both sides of a page automatically.

The HP 8550DN offers 600 dpi resolution with HP Image Resolution Enhancement technology (HP ImageREt 2400) and fast multiple prints using its RIP-once technology. The printing speed is 6 ppm for full color on 8.5-by-11-inch and A4 documents, and 24 ppm for black-and-white documents. The built-in 3.2 GB hard disk can store very large print jobs, and ensures consistent, high-quality printing over the life of the printer.

The HP 8550N is network ready, with remote installation, configuration, and manageability all made easy by HP Web JetAdmin. It has interfaces for IEEE 1284-compliant bidirectional parallel cables, and an HP JetDirect card for Fast Ethernet 10/100 Base-TX. HP JetDirect 600N (EIO) internal print servers are available as an option.

Okay, maybe I got a lemon out of the bunch, but I would never recommend this printer to anyone. Constant paper jams (even with extensive cleaning and maintenance), paper errors, and I can run a mile in less time than it takes this thing to warm up.

Print quality is very good (after it's warmed up for 5 minutes), but with all the other headaches I've had with this printer, it's not worth it. I spend more time fixing this printer or having a warranty call on it than it spends printing.

Go with Canon or Xerox. Stay away from this overpriced printer.

Let me start out by saying that I'm an HP-certified printer tech, and I generally really like HP's printers. The HP LJ 8550n has excellent print quality, reasonable print speeds, and a high capacity for upgrade. Unfortunately, it's also a constant problem. Even lovingly maintained, this printer is a royal pain in the pocketbook. In the course of 6mo, I've had to replace 1 formatter ($1500), 1 duplexer ($200), 3 transfer kits ($300), and countless other parts that shouldn't be replaced that often. Take the advice of an HP guy and avoid this money pit. HP has many other printers which are far superior to this monster.

Everything is great with this printer, the color is tremendous.
Print speed is very fast and very clear.
The only bad thing is the warm up time which is several minutes.
